I'm a newbie here. I just bought the guitar from a friend. Can I completely remove / unscrew the old allen head adjuster and install a new one? Any suggestions gladly appreciated.

A friend of mine had a truss rod in an electric broken inside the neck. He had to get a new neck, but it was an easy bolt on. I don't know how you'd fish the broken part out of there.

You can remove/replace the adjuster providing the truss rod itself is not stripped out. Only one way to find out; unscrew the old adjuster and see if there are any threads on the truss rod. New adjusters should be available at you local repair shop; if not, send the old one to me and I can get a replacement for you.

Maybe I was not clear. The allen head on the truss rod adjust nut is stripped. It looks like someone tried to to adjust the truss rod with the wrong size allen wrench and the allen wrench badly mucked up the allen head slot. I hope the truss rod is is not stripped. The neck adjustment gap is .021". On my Adamas the neck adjustment gap is .009". So the truss nut needs to be turned clockwise no more than 1/4 turn. The neck adjustment gap is not off by very much. My big concern is whether the Balladeer has a Dual action truss rod. These rods have the hex nut welded to the end of the rod and the nut can not be removed. I sent Ovation an e-mail to order the truss nut but they have not replied after several days. Not so great customer service!

Hang in there, Leonard. The guys at the Mothership provide fantastic service usually going above and beyond. Just ask some of the folks around here to verify that and I'm sure you'll have a little more confidence. Send another request to John.Budny@Kaman.com. He should be able to help.

Thanks Weaser P for John's e-mail. He replied within the hour and is sending me all the parts I need.
Has anybody ever done this repair? I am curious about whether the Dual action truss rod is an issue or the truss nut just unscrews like any other nut from a bolt.
