Location: Northeast Ohio | Hello everybody, I am looking for some opinions and advice on which model nylon string Ovation to look for. I have advancing osteoarthritis in both hands and have large painful nodules on the distal joints of both hands- ring, middle, and pinky fingers. Playing my steel string O's has become very unpleasant. After much research, many people with the same problem recommend switching to nylon string guitars. I know there are several Ovation models out there- can anyone steer me in the the right direction as to which model is the one to look for? Thank you so much for any help. james |

Location: Seymour, Tennessee | The Nylon Ovations have noticeably wider necks than normal steel stringers but they still too bad.
I just traded off my 81 Concert Classic that was a very pretty guitar, easy to play, and nice sounding.
I wouldn't buy a Celebrity anything but would suggest you keep your eyes peeled here, somebody will come up with some suggestions.
I will keep an eye out locally for you, evrey once in a while I find good stuff. |

Location: Texas | The 1624 Country Artist should work very well for you. It has 1 7/8 (maybe a tad less) neck. there are typically several on ebay and Guitar Center always seems to have a couple in their used gear. Unplugged, it is a little thin on a nice nylon response...plugged in...they sound great.
IMO, you certainly do not get the wide classical neck feel with this model.

Location: Boise, Idaho | I think the Country Artis is a little narrower than 1 7/8, but maybe not. It definitely has more curve in the fretboard than the Classics. I have more trouble with barre chords on the Classic. Jay is right. The Country Artists are very easy to play, but you give up a bit of the volume with the shallow bowl. They also have spruce tops, rather than the cedar of the Classics. That makes for a different sound. I won't say better or worse, just different. |

Location: Texas | "It has 1 7/8 (maybe a tad less) I think it is 1-3/4" 1/8th of an inch doesnt seem like it would be a lot, spread out amongst 6 strings...but when you go from that neck to a Classic 2"...it is a world of difference. I have always felt that it was a great compromise, allowing both worlds to feel comfortable with it. I will say this about Ovation 2" necks. To me, they are "thinner" than most classical guitars necks. But they are still harder than hell to bring your thumb over to cheat on the E. |

Yes, I was trying to describe it rather than use the Ovation names. I think the shallow bowl and the Artist bowl are pretty much the same. The supershallow bowl is thinner, then the shallow or Artist, then mid, then deep. Of course the contour bowl is supposed to have the same volume as the deep and the Adamas is deepest if it has the suspension ring. Someone posted a diagram with all the measurements years ago if you really want to go looking. |

Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | I had an Ovation Classical 1613 at one time with the 2" neck, and it was a great guitar. 2" in a bit wide for my small hands though, so I switched to the Country Artist. I liked that guitar, but it didn't have the deep bowl and projection I wanted though. I finally gave up on finding a true classical-sounding Ovation and "went to the other side", purchasing the Taylor hybrid classical. It is the only Taylor guitar I have ever really enjoyed. Now that I have totally digressed from your main point about playability with osteoarthritis, I'll steer back... To me, anything with a 2" neck is going to hurt my hands to play. If you are determined to get an O nylon string, the one Patch has shown you will be easy on the hands. Hope that helps. |

Location: seattle, wa | my suggestion would be a 1116 or 1113. both have a 2" nut but the neck profile is so playable, it is not an issue. It does help if you are not switching back and forth with a narrow neck guitar. Both have the deep bowl and are very loud. I think the 1113 has a little less on the high end due to the pine top. The spruce top 1116 will just shock you. It has a huge voice. |
