Now if you start to add an extra syllable on the end of words (as I learned when my daughters hit adolescence) it would be called a "dipthong".

Example: "No(uh)!"

It's more like the one syllable words become three, Sh-EEEE-it
and the 3 or 4 syllable words shrink and the accents change; not in-SURE-ance, it's IN-shurnce
