Location: Miami | An Ovation currently on the market is an Elite TX mid-depth bowl with a satin solid cedar top. Apart from the Classic, I've never played a cedar-topped O, but I'd be very curious to do so. Anyone here like 'em? |

Location: Keepin' It Weird in Portland, OR | I had a Special Balladeer (S771) with a Cedar Top that was nice.
I currently have a contour-bowl Celebrity (CC29S-4C) with a Cedar Top that also sounds nice.
But that CC29 has a shiny finish on it which kinda gets away for my concept of a Cedar top.
My S771 had a Satin finish as does the TX.
The Cedar top sounds different.
I cannot really describe it any other way... it is Nice, but it is Different.

Location: Right now? | I own an old deep bowl, (#B089) with a cedar topped, slot head, nylon string and that guitar is AWESOME. Light as a feather and sounds great.

| I have a cedar gc balladeer special, also. LX unbound neck, and natural finish, no fret markers. One of my favorites for fingerstyle. I think the cedar sounds somewhere between a classic cedar guitar, and an ovation mid bowl. Maybe a little muddy, but in a good way. Personally I love cedar ovations. I just need more money, far a classic model. "WOW" on that FD14. OMA I think you had the same guitars as me. GCS771LX-C, A beautiful guitar also. I love different! |

I wouldn't say the trebles, any more so, than the bass side. Just a lovely subtle cedar sound, across the board, but still has a good sustain, that I like in Ovations. I also agree that a natural finish is better that a shiny, to keep a more natural cedar sound. |

Location: Fort Worth, TX | Awhile back I took delivery of a cedar topped 1768C Elite that arrived with a crack in the top. I kept it anyway and learned how to repair the crack from an online article. I recently sold it. It was a finger picker's delight from the get go. When the guy was here trying it out I couldn't help but notice how, sitting across from him while he finger picked it, the bass notes I could feel in my chest from 8 feet away! There is currently a Balladeer Special with a cedar top in a music store nearby I have my eye on. The strings are totally dead so I can't accurately evaluate its tone, but I am going to drop in from time to time to see if they are ready to accept my offer for it after it sits there awhile longer. cedar tops are excellent for fingerstyle IMO and many others' as well. |
