How does one determine what model number the Ovation cases are? I have an Elite 1537 and an Adamas
1681-9. One case is black and the other is brown but they appear to be the same size. They fit the guitars perfectly. Would these be 8158 cases?? Thanking whomever out there can lead me farther down this road.

Brown usually means old as in the '60s and 70's. I think today's 8158 is just a cheaper version of the 9158. I bought a Folklore in about 1979 which came with the brown case.

As to the brown cases, I had one with purple fuzzy inside that would fit my 1121...
But my 1621 would not fit in it.
The purple fuzzy ones were for Shallow Bowl Artist. (Not Super-Shallow bowl)
Apparently the newer 1621 was a Mid-depth molded bowl, not the same.
Also, I have 9158 cases with the "Ovation" in the fur that you cannot put a contour bowl in...
But you can put a contour bowl in an 8158.
Maybe you can put a contour bowl in the Newer 9158 cases, but not in the ones that I have.
Also... My Folklore will not go into the newer 8158 cases because of the shorter neck.
The headstock ends-up resting on the neck support thingy, and I cannot close the case.
So I have to use the older cases with the metal "Ovation" on the outside.
But the Folklore fits just fine in the Brown Deep bowl case.

No point there... Just thought that I would share my confusion.

um, consult a psychic???

If there's an actual number on 'em somewhere, it's well hidden!

Regarding old brown cases, I have two, one came with my 1617 bought new, the other came with my 1667 bought used, they are two different style cases though.

Both have the same deep depth, but the 1617s case (circa early-mid 70s) is smaller in width and length. It also has a (decorative) black band around the aluminum edge were the latches are.

The 1667s case (circa early 80s) is the same size as the black cases from the later models I have. It does not have that band around the outside.

Again, both cases are for deep bowls but the inside padding has different indentations molded into it that correspond with the different locations of the volume / tone control knobs on the two guitars.  One is forward on the upper bout while the other is on the back bout near the waist. As slight as these two differences may seem the two guitars won't fit in each other's case.

But I guess if you absolutely had to you could "modify" (aka crush) the padding and make 'em fit.

No point here either... just my own observations

...and the case code conundrum continues
