Hi,

I have a couple questions I am hooping someone can help me with. I have an opportunity to purchase a 1112-4 Custom Balladeer from 1975 that is in pretty much mint condition with OHSC. My questions are what does the -4 stand for? what is the difference between that and a -1,-2, or a -3?

The selling price is $350, Is that a fair price?

Thanks,
Steve

The -4 is the color, which is Natural. On the FAQ subforum there is a thread "Breaking the Code" where you can find all the different color codes etc. Also there is a Serial Number List thread where you can verify the serial number against the year of manufacture.

That price sounds fine to me. For any vintage USA made Ovation in pretty good condition a price in the $300 to $500 range is common. The case is worth about $75 to $100 by itself if in good condition. $350 for a guitar and case in excellent condition would be a safe price (you could sell it if you don't like it and you won't lose money on the deal).

Having said that, those old Ovations in good condition are superior instruments. Meaning, they are "worth" a whole lot more than the current market. I have a 1976 Patriot which is quite similar to the guitar you are looking at, which I paid about twice (I forget precisely) your $350 (it's a limited edition collector edition). I have no regrets whatsoever. The guitar plays great and sounds even greater. Compared to other used guitars or even brand new guitars, a classic Ovation from the mid 70's is a high end guitar. Not an entry level or mid level consumer/student guitar, but a high quality pro level instrument.

Price and value are 2 different animals. Your $350 price sounds reasonable to me in terms of current market, but is a total bargain in terms of value. Buy it, play it, love it, keep it, forget what you paid for it, be happy.
