Joined: May 2012 Posts: 55 | I lucked into a couple of almost new Ovation pre-amps an OP-Pro and an iDea for next to nothing. Thought I would eventually resell them. But got to wondering if an Ovation guitar can be bought sans pre-amp? If so, I might keep them. How does one go about it? Thanks

So with an acoustic only, my guess would be you would have to do a re-routing of the bridge for the piezo and the bowl for the pre-amp and drill a hole for the jack. TaaDaa (is it two a's or one a?)

The "original" Ovation piezo pickups are wider than the acoustic-only saddle slots. Maybe the thinner "Slimline" piezo pickups might fit?? IDK
(jay - pretty sure it's 2 a's) BaaDaaBing!

If the guitar gets irretrievably damaged, someone might plunder the preamp and tuners before throwing it in the bin, so there are a few spare preamps floating around. These are likely to be bought by people who have a serviceable guitar where the preamp has gone on the fritz.

There are many of these cheaply available, but they tend to lack much more than just the pre-amp. Just go to ebay and search for "ovation project", e.g. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ovation-Elite-TX-2078TX-5-A-E-Guitar-Projec...

NO, Ovation/Kaman/Fender is not gonna sell you a New instrument that way. You may find a Used instrument like that... But that is it. On those stripped models... the missing preamp would be the least of it's problems. Those sellers wouldn't have stripped them if the guitar was worth something intact. (the action probably suct anyway, so it was worth more in parts since you can't reset the neck) There is a possibility that you might find a store that has an Ovation that someone stole the module from, but this would still be considered a Used guitar. I have an iDea module... It will fit in an OP-Pro can, so I can switch if I am so inclined. I also have a Studio and a VIP... Same thing, I can use them in another guitar if I want. If you have an OP-Pro module and an iDea module I would just look for a good guitar with an OP-Pro in it already... That way you can use the iDea in it and have a spare OP-Pro... for whatever. BTW-- A "standard" OP-Pro will NOT work in an iDea can... But and iDea WILL work in an OP-Pro can. go figure

Keep the back up Preamps for later use as replacements or Wait and watch (with about a dozen or so of the BFLG) for a nice pre-ampless guitar to show up or Resale the preamps when an OFCer has the need I have cut and installed OP cans and preamps into 1615s and 1617s which works fairly well.

Carefully use a template to hand cut the kidney shaped hole for the can, drop in the OpPro. Instant perfection. http://www.ovationfanclub.com/megabbs/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=34...
