Joined: September 2005 Posts: 3619 Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | I usually don't have any problems selecting strings for myself, as I usually buy EXP Phospher Bronze Lights for my guitars. ...BUT.... I have a 10-yr-old that I have been giving free lessons to that has a baby taylor. He is a special kid, in that he spends ALL of his free time practicing, and he learns very quickly. Because he plays so much, Every week I see him his strings are already going flat. I don't have any experience buying strings for a small guitar like that, so I don't know what to recommend. I just think he needs something that will last longer, without putting his parents in the poor house. Any suggestions???

If the EXPs last longer than Elixers, then it looks like you've already run out if options, other than going up a gauge. Seems VERY strange that they're going "flat" after only a week tho'. I think it would be fine on regular, non-coated strings, but it may screw up coated strings. Great idea though, for someone who cannot afford to change strings frequently.

His mom told me the guitar shop was charging her 20 bucks to put a set of strings on it. Every time I saw the guitar I noticed the fretboard was dry and dirty, and the top was also dried up and wearing. So I took his guitar for the night, cleaned and oiled the fretboard, wiped down the mahogany top with a very light coat of oil also to fill the scratches, and put the strings on it. That night his mom emailed me and said he couldn't wait to get at the guitar and check out his new strings. When he saw the guitar he commented to his mom that it looked like a brand new guitar (: Now... when he gets old enough to move to a larger instrument, I'm gonna talk his parents into a USA Ovation.
