How many here have a special rider on your home owner's insurance to cover for your instruments?  To my knowledge my home owner's insurance does not cover instruments over a certain amount.  This is something I need to look into.  Also, I often have my guitar with me at the school where I teach, NOT at home.  I wonder if my home owner's insurance covers it while I'm at my job.  I guess it would be the same thing as coverage while at a gig.  Teaching elementary music and private guitar lessons is my "gig."

I also wonder what value I'd place on my instruments.  I want them covered for their REPLACEMENT value and not what the current market for them is.

By the way, I searched the archives on this issue and couldn't find anything on this in the last year.

Have you considered asking your insurance agent?

Check into musician's instrument insurance. The coverage and rates are typically better than homeowner's policies.

Standing, of course, but I wanted to hear how others insured theirs or IF they have a special policy for theirs. My insurance is drafted automatically from the escrow account of my mortgage. Once it was set up like that I haven't had a thought about it since. But I really need to, esp. since I'm getting ready to add a new "baby" to my collection!

Thanks, noah, that's a good tip.

I tried to purchase a rider for my instruments through State Farm, who carries all my auto and home policies, but was told they WILL NOT cover instruments that are used in bars (?). Thought that was kinda crappy. Now I have my coverage through the Union. Their rates are pretty good, and I know their insurance carriers know musicians and musicians' issues.

This came up years ago, and I have a vague recollection of checking my coverage with State Farm and deciding I was OK. There might have been a limit that I have now exceeded, so it would be worth checking again. This is a good topic to consider every few years and it's nice to see that Cliff is still watching out for us.

I use the same as Cliff and several other gigging musicians in the forum.

Covers you everywhere for everything and the rates are reasonable.

Same here...but was told by my State Farm agent that it was any instruments used to make money or for employment purposes.

Thanks Damon. Someday we hope you'll get old and can experience some of those senior moments. Usually it's the short term memory that goes, so I am sure I forgot that we had just talked about this and remembered that we had talked about it a long time ago.

I discussed the subject with my agent a while back, and she suggested I add a rider for my musical instruments as a "collection." I'd have to have written appraisals on each instrument though. Instead, I just started selling a bunch of them, so now I don't have enough to really worry about.

The 2 big ones are Heritage (The one Cliff spoke to above) and Clarion. Seems coverage is comparable but I found Heritage/musicins.com to be a bit more affordable on premiums.

If I remember right, they seemed a bit less pressured to make the sale on the phone too. They're the ones I use too.

Can't speak to the service as I haven't had to use it thank *** (knock on lyrachord)

So far this week I left my glasses at one restaraunt, and my credit card at another.... And there were no drinks involved.
