Location: Marlton, NJ | I have a an 1869 with an OP-50 preamp which includes an XLR output. I want to upgrade to either an OP-Pro or OP-Pro Studio and had a couple questions I hope the experts here could help me with:
- Will my existing XLR output board work with the new preamp and can?
- The OP-Pro Studio doesn't have the Pre-EQ Shape button like the other preamps. I usually play with this engaged. Does the Op-Pro Studio have the Pre-EQ Shape already applied or is the EQ flat?

Location: Miami | I prefer the OP-PRO. I too like the pre-EQ button and use it engaged all the time. The OP-PRO studio sounds very different to me. It's a sound I personally don't like. I found that it is more likely feedback through my PA (I tried it on 2 Adamases through a Bose L1) than the OP-PRO on the same guitars, and after too much tweaking, I stuck with the tried and true OP-PRO. I'm in no way knocking the Studio. It just didn't work for me. |

The OP-50 has a Notch filter, Pre-Shape, and a 4-Band EQ.
What more could you want.
The OP-Pro does have the Pre-EQ which is useful.
I push it in (Etheridge) for Rhythm, and out (DiMeola) for finger-picking and lead stuff.
The OP-Pro Studio has the Drive/Expressor... But no Pre-Shape.

Location: Utah | On a wood topped guitar I love the Studio. A little bit of both compressor and excitor just makes it come alive. In our Adamases it didn't really do much. The reverse for the VIP - in the Adamas it is fabulous but in our wood topped O's I was not impressed.
For live situations the Studio was perfect for me. Places like church or a multi-act venue where there isn't much time for a sound check and the sound guy is of limited expertise. If you've got a good pedal board for your acoustics or if you're recording then you might not use the Studio's features. |

Location: Germany, where delicious wine is growing (Rheinh) | Hi Mark, I don't know the can of the OP-50, I've had only a OP-40, but if it has 8 connection pins you can swap directly for an OP-Pro or Studio. The XLR borard is the same one. If your can has only 7 connectors you have to change the can, too but the XLR cable will fit the new can.
As for your second question: I would not answer in general the Studio is better or worse. I've had an old 1627 GC I've upgrated to the new preamp system. It was sounding incredible with the Studio but my old 1614 also upgrated sounds better with the Pro. I would prefer the Pro for gigging because of the phantom power....

Location: Northwest Arkansas | I have an OP-50 with XLR and I had to swap cans with the VIP, OP-Pro, and the OP-Pro Studio. They all had xlr. The VIP, OP-Pro and Pro will use the same cans. |
