| Hi Folks,
I have bought two Ovation 12-strings (1981 Pacemaker #1615 and a Standard Balladeer #1751). Two different pickup systems both with the same "problem" playing live. I'd like to hear if someone has some advice or an analysis of why this is taking place...
First of all, I'm using a BOSE L1 Model 2 system. Currently, I'm using no outboard EQ or DI. Just plugging in to their T1 Mixer.
What I'm noticing is that the 12 strings seem to lose some of their fullness coming through the PA. It's as if not all of the strings are registering during the strum of a chord. Secondly, there seems to be a slight delay. Lastly, the 1751 has less volume on the low "E" than the other strings.
I spoke with John Budny. His recommendation was to replace the pickups that came with the guitars and upgrade to something current.
Thoughts?'
Thanks,
Scott "kidmuse" Bierko

| Follow-up question: What model of Ovation or Adamas do you use live that sounds absolutely amazing live as it does in the studio or living room? Is there a specific pickup system that works best on the 12's? |

I always thought my acoustic guitars sounded real "thin" on playback when recording. Started running everything though a preamp (TubeMPs mostly) and that problem disappeared. The only other thing that "fixed" the sound was running an Alesis Midiverb (outboard of the mixer), but when I use the Alesis, I'm after pretty heavy effects, so there is a significant difference in sound anyway. |

I use an Adamas 2080D Longneck and it is absolutely amazing, both live and recorded. Several members have had a chance to hear it and play it. |

We've had numerous 6 string Ovations with modern preamps onboard. OpPro, Studio, VIP, iDea, Op30. All of them have sounded just fine through a PA with no loss of quality. The Studio and VIP preamps are I think even better than the plain OpPro with a hint of their digital processing dialed in.
My 35 yr old Alvarez-Yairi 12 string with a passive pickup sounds good, too.
So I wonder if you need some kind of signal boost or eq before your Bose system? |
