IMHO they have a comparable sound but the newer one is nearly noiseless and noticeable lighter. It reduced the overall weight of the guitar by 120 gr (0,25 lb), that's about 5 %. Not terribly much but these old Kaman-bar-two-knobbers are heavyweights and so any weight reduction is welcome. Karl

Is there any gain by removing the electronics..acoustic wise?

I love the feel of really lightweight strings, but I, too, have noticed some tone loss up high. I'm starting to set up different guitars with different string weights so I have options. Options are good.
