Cut up any credit card.

Really!

Any plastic material like that. Something that is good and solid.
I say credit card, but library card, Safeway card... Whatever.

Just depending on the thickness of what you need.

I'm with Arthur, if you need more thickness, cut up a circuit board, even more, lookout to get a bone saddle of a classical guitar and use it flat.

Good question. I KNEW about the credit card solution, hadn't heard about using a bone classical saddle. In a perfect world, I guess a sliver of bone or maybe a sliver of tusc would be the best shim material???? If not, what?

Normally the less you put under a saddle the better. However It should be consistent material like bone or brass (or wood, why not....).

I mean: Don't use SEVEN stripes of credit card material. If you have to use shims, try to use only one.

The obvious answer is to call the factory. When I contacted them about shims, I was prepared to buy some but they graciously sent me a bunch of them for free.

I have an envelope full of shims for a 1971 Balladeer that the factory sent (for free) along with a saddle...
