Joined: April 2011 Posts: 97 Location: Marlton, NJ | I'm looking for a compact case for my Ovations (soon to be two). They are both Super Shallow. I've got about 15 guitars, most of which I keep out in a large stand, but my acoustics I like to keep in their cases to humidify in the winter. At the moment I have four acoustics: two Ovations, one Taylor (I plan to sell to buy another Ovation), and one nylon string Takamine (I'd like to sell but the value is almost nil). The acoustics' cases take up room! And that doesn't take into account my synths, drums, computer desk, or book shelfs. Does anyone have a suggestion for the most compact case to keep my acoustics in, or some other solution on how to store them so I can still humidify them in the winter? On a side note, I used to never keep my previous Ovation guitars humidified, but then I bought some other sensitive guitars that I needed to care for in the winter, which led me to thinking my wood-top Ovations needed the same love. Now I'm afraid to return to my old ways. The winters are dry in Jersey. Mark

I figured out awhile ago that it was much easier and cheaper to keep them in the same room with one decent humidifier with a humidistat. The cases I keep separately in a storeroom. Using a Dampit or similar humidifier in 12 different cases was expensive and time consuming. During the winter here, I have to fill the humidifier as much as a couple times a week in order to keep it at 46%. During the summer I don't have to fill it at all.

When I take a guitar out for gigs, I use one of four or five utiity-sized cases for similar sized guitars (SSBs, deep bowls and wood OMs and dreads, electrics, archtops, and the hybrids). I don't like the factory hard cases for everyday handling because they tend to bang into and chew up woodwork, seat backs, furniture, etc. I prefer hard foam, nylon covered cases. When the room is humidity and temperature controlled, the guitars stay just fine year round. I do have to dust occasionally.

It's the safest place for them, especially when I'm gone away for awhile. I put humidifiers in all my cases, even my electric solid bodies to prevent fret sprout.

I have one model that fits all my deep bowls, dreads, and OMs. They don't make these cases any more, so they are increasingly difficult to find. Grab one when you can.
