Short story - she encourages me to buy really nice guitars! It's not an O, but it's still a sweet guitar.

Long story: Last month we were vacationing in Virginia and stopped at a number of guitar stores. I played a higher-end Larrivee at one (a guitar I've never seen for sale hereabouts), and both of us really liked the sound of it, much more than any of the others I played. But it was more than we were willing to spend at the time, and acquisition got filed away for "one day down the road."

Fast forward to yesterday. It's a gray, lazy, rainy Sunday so we were surfing eBay together playing the "what I would buy if I had no restrictions" game, and I pulled up a search for Larrivee. Sure enough, there's a newly listed LV-09 (all solid, master-grade Canadian sitka spruce top, Indian rosewood back and sides) with a Baggs iMix No Cut preamp, with an $845 BIN and free shipping.

Granted, the guitar is not pristine - for one thing the original side-mounted preamp was removed, and there's a rosewood panel that was professionally installed in place of the hole - there are play wear marks around the soundhole and a finish-only check under the bridge, but that's still a good price for a very nice boutique git.

So what are SWMBO's first words when she sees it? "Holy sh@t! That's an -09 for less than $1,000? Buy it right now!" Not only does she know the quality and value of this model, she practically orders me to buy it.

Well, far be it from me to encourage marital strife, so I did what I was told. It should arrive later this week and I'll post pix then. A little cya, some polishing compound and a bit of elbow grease should make it almost new.

I am one lucky SOB!

I got an HD28VS that is calling your name once you get tired of the 09 ;)

Oppps.....I was thinkin Trader Jim and his penchant to last about 3-4 weeks with a new guitar. Knowing Serge, this one will have a home for a long long time!

Funny isn't it...when I went to SWMBO about getting Beggin's Viper, she gave me the runaround for several days and grumbled about the cost.
Then when I asked about Stephent28 1688, she took one look at the pictures of it and said "You better buy that before he puts it on Ebay!!!", yet it was several times the cost of the Viper...Go figure!

Just got to love the unpredicability of these great SWMBO we have :)

Maybe mine just can't say no to those cauliflower headstocks :D

Thanks guys. We all have very special (and tolerant and patient) partners.

s28 - vintage series, huh? Haven't played that particular model, but I was more impressed with the Larrivee on an A/B comparison to a regular HD-28. You are evil ;) but that'll have to wait until next year. SWMBO really would kill me (or neuter me at the least) if I bought yet another git this year!

Don't want to stir the flames to soon!

btw...no comparison between a regular HD28 and a HD28VS. Different sound, bracing, 12 vs 14 fret, slothead....all the things we love.

and "next year" always starts on April 16th!

Stephen, you are crazy to get rid of that one. If I'm not mistaken, it's the same configuration as my CEO-5 which is a great guitar. I've actually owned this one for more than a year now! (that's a record)

Serge, you will really like the Larry. I had the "v" model of the 09 (cutaway) and it was a very nice sounding animal. Larrivee has it's own sound, like Martin does. Equal in quality, just different. I'm on my 4th one now.....(L10, Lv09e, SD50, P09 limited) :D

When I started looking into buying more guitars my wife was all over me about why I needed more than one. She was also being influenced by my friend's wife(he has 11). I was more than happy to remind them of their jewelry collection and that I was aquiring guitars at less than market value or that they were increasing in value. Since then she has been very supportive of my GAS, and she really loves the Adamas. I'm also smart enough to allow her to add to her jewelry collection.

says the trader..........

I'm crazy to get rid of every guitar I sell but even though I have a bunch of guitars I am not a collector. If they don't get played, they gotta go.

This one is fabulous and has that classic Martin sound without the muddy bass that a lot of them tend to have. I just slightly prefer the sound of the Collings slothead 12 fret dread so this one's gotta go.

Gonna post it in the For Sale section this afternoon.

SERGE....THANKS FOR LETTING ME HIJACK YOUR THREAD!

Tim, you either have a great memory or excellent record keeping skills. I know I bought some guitars and equipment over the past year or two, but I'm not sure I could itemize the numbers and years like you.

Beal, You have one of them Harp thingies (Merrill)?

I think someone here needs to buy a Ervin Somogyi and then bring it to the NW gathering... So I can play it! I've always lusted after his guitars, just never had $25k+

Record keeping skills, blame it on SWMBO !! Also, 95, 2000, 2005 were all 5th year anniversary dates, guess what I always asked for..

Of course, I'm not up to 30 something guitars yet, but I'll catch up to you one day Prof :p

hmm.
for me trading period started just about a year ago.
march 07: bought Legend (root of all evil - it was my 3rd guitar actually)
april 07: bought 2
may 07: sold 1
june 07: bought 2, sold 1, returned 2nd to seller
july 07: bought 2,
august 07: sold 1
september: traded-in 1 for 1, bought 1
october: sold 1
december: bought 1
january 08: gave one as a gift
march 08: bought 1
april 08: bought 1, trying to sell 1.

%R$#@%. thats 12 guitars in 13 months. And to think that before coming here i was just another "normal" guy.
i think there is no SWMBO who'd accept that rate of buying / selling.

dvd started a thread on this awhile ago, called something like MIB's rationalizations for new guitars. Most of them never worked for me. I just bought the guitars and incurred the wrath of SWMBO until she got over it. The reciprocity thing never worked for me--I always spent way more on her. Fortunately, she's really not into jewelry, but buying "her" a Porsche didn't work at all in terms of getting guitar credit. Now we can't afford any guitars until we pay off the home equity loan.
It was exactly a year ago this week that we bought the OFC guitar and I supposedly agreed that I wouldn't buy any more guitars for a couple years. I know that wasn't in writing and therefore is void under the Statute of Frauds, but I haven't used that as an excuse for buying two more in the last year. SWMBO cuts right through that legal BS and knows that she prevails over logic any time. We met in Logic class in college and I tought her enough to get through the class. That's all she needed.
I know you are all very sympathetic to my plight. I really don't have it too bad. She let me drive the Porsche out of the garage yesterday so I could wash it and drive it back in.

Congratulations g8r! You have been on a spree lately! Sounds like a great deal on a really nice guitar. And you can't beat having a supportive wife!

Every guitar I have bought has been with the encouragement of my wife. I probably wouldn't have gotten the 47RI, if she hadn't been there telling me "you need this guitar"! She even bought the Eastman Archtop for me.

Lucky SOB. Yeah, me too.

Enjoy the Larrivee! We should get together some Saturday halfway between Orlando and Gainesville and play guitars. After you get the Larrivee, of course!
