If you haven't already, learn and master it. Travis picking comes in handy. I like this link for that purpose.

Location: Flahdaw | I can Travis pick with the best of them, but I don't do it on this song...and don't see any reason why you would have to. Using the thumb and 1st 3 fingers is so much easier and sounds the exact same

I thought that's what Travis picking was? Anyway, that's how the instructor does it in the video as well (thumb and 1st 3 fingers). It feels good when it comes together. |

So I thought, but not quite. Tried both styles on this song a while ago. To me, the difference seems to be the time signature. If you play thumb and first three fingers, you get something like a 2/2. Like tick... tock. That is because the sound made by the thumb is (at least mine) stronger than the others. If you do the Travis thing, it sounds more like 4/4, like tick-tock-tick-tock, because the thumb hits all the beats.
But then again it may just be my ears ... |

Location: Flahdaw | I alternate my thumb if I'm using a 5 string picking pattern, but not for a 4 string picking pattern. Seems overly laborious (and again to me) sounds the same. But it's like a golf swing....they're all different and if your ball still ends up where you want it to go, then it's all good. |
