It is a non-LX guitar with the Op30 preamp. The 1778LX is a super guitar, with the Guitar Center version GC178LX being a good buy. You'd have to go with a used 1778LX to be in your price range. Bang-for-the-buck would mean going used in mint or near-mint condition. Any of them would be a great guitar, and for the money they blow away all other brands IMHO. Personally, I'm partial to the OpPro preamp, or even the OpPro Studio, but it is really just a personal preference.

I have a 6778LX and it's a fantastic guitar. My advice would be to be patient and try to find a l778LX or 6778LX within the price range. Perhaps check with Al and see if he can get, or has, an FRG. My local GC (Carle Place, NY) has a 1778LX with some scratches in the top that they are selling for $700.
