Location: Portland, OR | I have a bunch of pic-marks all over my 2078lx (black top), and somehow remember a long time ago someone posting about using a product to take the "swirl marks" out of their top. Has anyone used a re-finishing product to remove pic marks?

Location: Boise, Idaho | I don't know if I'd recommend this on your guitar, but I'll tell you what I did on my $150 Ultra GS. It had heavy pick marks above the strings and into the pick guard. I wet sanded it with 2000 and 1500 grit to take most of it out. Then some polishing compound. Then some 3M or Maguire's swirl remover. All of this is available at an auto supply store or you might be able to order it from StewMac. The swirl remover takes a ton of elbow grease, so I used a soft cotton rotary buffer that attaches to a drill. That really polished it up nice. There's only a couple of the deep scratches left out of hundreds. I'm sure I went through most of the clearcoat, which is probably thinner on yours, so you might just try the swirl remover first and see if it takes them out. If not go up my process backwards.

Location: Utah | I used the Micro Mesh soft sanding pads from StewMac on my Patriot. It worked quite well. If I were more aggressive maybe I could have done even more.

A little water helps when using these pads. The coarser pads cut pretty quickly. Use care. The finer pads take more time but will get a pretty good shine. |

Location: Indiana | From the auto department @W-Mart or auto store... Meguiar's Scratch X2.0. It does wonders on the catalyzed poly tops and necks.

Location: Massachusetts | If you use an automotive product make sure it's a polishing compound, and not a rubbing compound. Go lightly with a piece of cheesecloth or cotton rag and do it a little at a time so you don't remove too much finish. But before you do anything, try using your fingernail to see if the scratches catch on your nail, if they don't, you should able to polish the scratches out nicely. |
