And the one who wrote the song, too: Harry Nilsson.

The story behind the Monkeys is unique, and still somewhat unknown to a lot of people. They were not intended to be a real band. They were a group of actors hired to play a band on a television show. I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to sort out the rights to all the trademarked material after the show closed down but the music and band lived on.

I am pretty sure Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork were actual musicians. Not sure of their skill level but they both played instruments.

I think Peter Tork actually played like 5 different instruments, which is how he got cast on the show. That wanted at least one of them to look like they weren't faking it.

Did you know that Mike Nesmith went on to found MTV? Pretty crazy...

They all had careers before The Monkees, to varying degrees.
Davy was a stage actor and jockey (I think) in England.
Micky had some experience on TV.
Peter was a good all 'round musician (by comparison)
Mike was already a published songwriter. (Different Drum - Linda Ronstadt & the Stone Ponies)

Mike Nesmith had the most career success/achievement Post-Monkees.
Hit song(s) - Joanne - Mike Nesmith & the First National Band

Rio

First Video Grammy - Elephants Parts. (try to find/watch Dr. Ducks Super Secret Sauce)

As well as producing various movies (Repo Man, Tapeheads, Timerider)
...and still going!

I heard Peter playing guitar, keyboard, and banjo on the "Monkee's Headquarters" tapes. Micky starred in the TV show "Circus Boy". Davy was a stage actor and appeared on the Ed Sullivan show the same night the Beatles made their debut.
