I've landed a couple of pinstriping jobs on some motorcycles coming in very soon. My wife knows I intend to spend the money on another Ovation as long as I put money from next few jobs into the wedding fund for our daughter. I'm woefully ignorant of the Ovation model line up however. What would be your next choice to acquire if you already have a Balladeer? I'm going to have about $700. I like the wood top guitar with the "shotgun" soundholes. Hopefully it isn't an Adamas since I doubt 700 would get one of those. I won't buy anything but an older USA made. Any recommendations?

That price would give you a pretty good selection of USA Elite models to chose from I would think.

Thanks Wayne. I looked that up on Google images and it's exactly the one I was hoping for.

Dave, the 6768 deep bowl Elite I bought new years ago can probably be had for half that amount used, and it has been my faithful companion for nearly 20 years. Can't go wrong with one of those early to mid 90's Elites...

Actually, here's the exact Elite I have (finish and all) on Ebay for $400, although it has some significant cracks or cold checking going on...keep your eyes open and maybe something similar in better condition will pop up.

Yep...I agree... If you are patient, you should be able to easily grab a nice wood-topped elite for that much. I even seen the coveted 1537 go that low on occaision. Good luck!

6868 full bowl Elite, local dealer has, no cracks, no marks except small mark on the badk ot the neck where it sat in a stand.

$550 he will negotiate.   I believe this is a 97, don't know why the pic is sideways I tried to change it but it keeps going sideways.

I can give you the name and # of the owner of the guitar.  This use to be his personal guitar, then mine, now his again.  Money issues so

I had to sell it back to him.  He owns a music store/trading post.

Cay anyone tell me the difference in sound/playability I can expect with this guitar over my 40th anniv Balladeer. I've been told already I will be disappointed with anything else after the Balladeer. Anybody who has owned both who can enlighten me? The subject still comes up to sell the Balladeer to add to the wedding fund. I would hold out til I find that one person who REALLY wants it enough to give me $1600. I know, I know - I've been told over and over it's an unreasonable expectation. Then again, I had one person from this forum say "wow, that"s a good deal because not many of the 40th have hit the secondary market yet". I have hope, or at least know there's a sucker born every minute. And I can write convincing ad copy!

You could get one of many different models in the $700 or less price range. The 6778LX, 1778LX, 1778T (not the TX), 2007BCS collector's edition, 2078T, etc. are the newer LX versions which you might find at the upper end of your range. They would be a different flavor than the older non-LX guitars. Sonically different but not deficient at all compared to your Balladeer.

The 6778 LX guitar is a VERY nice git. It seems it's getting a bit harder to find, too. The 6868 above is also very nice. I sold one a while back, but it was hard to let it go. It had a wonderful tone.

Some people say that the Elites don't sound as good as a single sound hole O to the person playing it, but if you get someone else to play it for you, you'll hear it much better. (For some reason ALL my guitars sound better when someone else is playing them!)

I had a beautiful 1768 deep bowl elite. It played and sounded great, but I sold it coz I'm a single sound hole guy.

I just don't get it.
You have a 40th anniversary that you love. You keep trying to find a replacement for it so you can sell it and use the funds for your daughter's wedding. You are about to make $700 from a couple of jobs, plus you will continue to get more jobs and use THAT money for the wedding. Sounds like a wash to me. ...
You'll make about $1600 or so between now and the wedding, and you'll sell the 40th for $1600 (no way).
Seems to me you are better off keeping the 40th and using your cash for the wedding. (unless, in truth, you REALLY don't care that much for the 40th)

There used to be a sitcom on tv with all black people - I don't remember the name. In one episode a girl was making excuses to her mother for something she did. She began by saying "I bent over to tie my shoes Momma". The mother said "you don't have shoelaces". The girl deadpanned "believe me Momma, I was as confused as you are". I'll make more than $1600 before the wedding - just sold a $800 job yesterday. The idea of selling the 40th isn't on the table anymore - not even if I was offered $1600. The sound it has is just too phenomenal - EVERYTHING went perfect when it was made - it's the Stradivarius of O's. I am jealous (actually, feel inadequate to) of all you guys with a stable of O's. If I had walked into that music store and this Balladeer had been an Elite then I would own an Elite now. I think Elites are museum quality pieces of guitar art. Don't know about the sound - never seen one being played in person. I just NEED another O to feel worthy around here. BTW... my 40th sits on a stand next to my side of the bed so I can look at it day and night. Does that tell you anything about how much I care for it?

Why is race relevant at all to your example? Why do you mention it? Does it change the story? Are you trying to make some point?

Tread carefully my friend ...

nope. I only thought the reference would help someone remember what show it was. You read far too much into it. All 3 of my kids have dated people of other races - fine by me.

Dave needs to attend a gathering.

And he needs to bring cash and have room for another guitar on the trip home...
