Jason, Knoppix, Damn Small Linux, Ubuntu, there are several options. Good news about doing it via USB is you can try several until you find the one you like the best. Try pendrivelinux.com to get you started.

I run Ubuntu on a couple of laptops here at work. Our UKian transplant runs some form of Linux on a pendrive (from the site David linked earlier) and it's pretty cool. I was a big SuSE fan until Novell started dinking around with it. Mandrake was useless to me, but that's been a few years.

For ease of install/use, I haven't found anything easier than Ubuntu, though.

I'd go with bittorrent, although I live very close to a couple of hard-core linux mirror sites, so I often just ftp them myself. (Oregon State University Open Source Lab hosts kernel.org, and Portland State has a nice mirror of all the big players. Linus lives out somewhere on my side of town here in Portland but I've never crossed paths with him.)

i don't know why my previous post wasn't posted.
i think that switching from Win XP to Linux is a bad idea right now. Linux is a nice alternative, but it's no match for home usage for Windows, especially XP.
I'm using Unix systems on daily basis for past 11 years, and since 2005 i don't have any UN*X on my home Pc. i've used FreeBSD aswell as Debian Linux, and i don't see any reason why i should use them now on my home pc. They're slower, they don't provide support for all hardware installed on my PC etc.
Unix is great system to use on servers. stable and fast (while working on console, not on X-window system).
If you'll like it - use it. But i'm too lazy right now to use it.

Jason_S what class of PC do You use?
Previously i had Athlon XP 2000+ with 512mb of ram and radeon 8500 128mb graphic card and it was quite hard to get a decent work speed on KDE 3.5
It was ok on Afterstep windows menager, but it was like going back in time to early 90's.
I did try to install system on my new PC (Core duo E4600, 4gb of ram, 500gb sata hdd,GF 8600 GTS etc.) and first problem was with installation on SATA drive, then after getting it work, there were problems with my ESI Juli@ soundcard, which didn't want to work properly no matter how hard i've tried, and last problem was with my DVD-rec because i couldn't use Lightscribe under Linux.
i think 8h a day under text console is enough for me if it comes to unix systems,
and i still think that FreeBSD is far better system than Linux.

Funny, I've only ever used my Linux server to burn lightscribe labels. Guess we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one LBJ. 'nuff said.

mine was introduced few months ago. maybe this is the reason why it's not working. BTW, that LG failed a week ago and i've bought Samsung SH-203 as a replacement. So far, it's better than LG.

PCLinuxOS is really good. It comes Java environment, a recent flashplayer and OpenOffice. Runs quite allright on my 400MHz PII system with a reasonable amount of RAM. One CD includes a live file system and a harddisk install tool.

I also like FreeBSD but I had a hard time getting especially flashplayer and java working, and OpenOffice is not supporting FreeBSD as well as Linux.
