I know the answer to strengthening you fretting hand is play more.

There seems to be a few devices on the market.

Anyone have experience with these?

Any recommendations?

TIA

Oh geeez! No, I've never used any product to improve hand strength... even when I played base/soft ball.

But I think ya might have opened a can of 'worms' for some risqué responses...

When I first started playing my left hand would get real tired. I kept my practice down to 30-45 minutes daily until my hand strengthened.

I know there are devices out there but I used the old fashioned method. If you go too long you just get tired and disgusted when the cramps begin. I always quit playing when I started to fumble up alot.

My youngest daughter gave me a hand-grip thingie some time ago , so , just to please her , I included it in my warm-up routine , at first I thought ..tjah.... but then I squeezed it holding it the way I hold the neck , and by jove , at first , I got tired within seconds , but now , I feel the difference , my thumb-pressure has improved , my hand curls/pivots much easier around the neck , individual finger movement has become a little smoother , overall , there`s Improvement..

I've got one of the ones with four separate thingys on springs, so it puts pressure on each finger. It is useful when I go away or can't access my guitar for a while, as it takes up almost no space. However, as I'm playing regularly now and have my traveler guitar, it doesn't get used much.

It's useful when you can't play your guitar, such as during meetings at work when you don't need to take any notes.

All jokes aside, I don't know about "strengthening", but fish oil and glucosamine are good supplements to take to help your joints stay loose. Also youtube "hand strengthening exercises" and you should get something.

Why do the jokes always have to be "aside" now. I figured for sure there'd be a few. This group has become very intellectual and safe it seems.

I say we need Cliff back, for only HE can drop our intellectual collective to its lowest common denominator where it used to be....and fast!

And to keep "on topic" for the intellectuals I say play more is the answer AJ. Do bar chords until ya cramp and keep using that little finger for the lead scales.
My worries have not been the strength, I am lucky enough to have worked through this......(all jokes aside).......I find I have trouble with joint pains. I refuse to believe I have to deal with this at 47 but it is what it is. I beat my hands hard when I was younger........(all jokes aside)........and I am paying for it now. I take the glucosamine complex tablets and I'll be dammed if they don't actually work.
A couple of aspirin and a couple GC tablets and I can feel the difference within a few hours and with the practice schedule we are beginning now I am working the neck of a guitar for four or five hours most days, acoustic and electric and now bass for a few songs.

If your body can heal quickly enough, what you put into your neck work you get back out. It comes in small steps though, you notice a little more speed or that your hand changes between two new chords easier and easier. It is as much fun to learn this stuff as it is to play it I say.
Muscle memory. It's my favorite human assessory. Well other than that other one......... :D

In addition to the glucosamine tablets, you can get creams with glucosamine in them too. While rubbing this into my knee (which is what I take the tablets for) I noticed my fingers feeling a lot better too. Go figure!

You know the goofy thing on that....I tried rubbing the cream on my hands, and fingers, but then you want to wash your hands before you play guitar so you don't gunk up your strings. It's a catch 22. What they need is a roll on glucosamine ointment. (I do use a roll on menthol heat product sometimes)

I tried this:
Dyna-Flex Pro Gyroscopic Exerciser

I have just the basic model, but you can get a version with a digital reading of the RPM that you've reached...

Fingerweights were very popular for a while. Lots of reviews both pro and con(surprise!).

Fingerweights Video

a friend of mine in Arizona had a set of these and I tried them out for about 30 minutes. My hand was totally exhausted. With continued use I could imagine they would help to strengthen your hands and fingers.
