I wrote a long request post that mysteriously disappeared, so I'll try it again. Can I please get some user reviews of the Ovation Custom Legend 1769 ADII AND/OR the Ovation 2008 Adamas Collector's Edition guitar? I figured I'd start low and so I bought myself a CS-257. I am pleasantly surprised with how much I love this guitar. I have to admit though that those graphite tops scare me a bit, loving good ol' acoustics like I do. I figured this is the place to check it out and get 'set straight'. Forgive me if this post twice. I'm new to the forum. Thanks in advance! ;P

2008 Adamas Collectors is one of the best. If I was shopping that is the one I would grab. The ADII is a very nice guitar but it has gotten mixed reviews (love/hate). The best of both worlds might be the OFC2 custom guitar which is an Adamas with the ADII boost switch.

I think Al might have these in stock and he is located in your neck of the woods (NJ).

The Adamas 08 Collector is one of the best ever Ovation guitars. Some others to consider - in all cases contact Lost Art Vintage.

Adamas 08 Collector (might be all gone)
Adamas 1687 Reissues (available now)
Adamas OFCD Guitar (available soon)

I wouldn't monkey around with any new wood top ovations.

Good luck.

Thanks, Daniel. Those CS-257's are NICE, aren't they? I am very, very pleased at what I got for my money. I have to ask: What color is yours? I thought the one I bought was going to be cherry sunburst, but when I got it, it is more like a plumburst finish. I wasn't so sure about the color, but once I played it, I wasn't sending it back. ;)

I like my AD-II. Maybe it's "just" a dressed Custom Legend but it is the top of the line wood-topped guitar.
That being said, there are any number of custom and limited edition Ovation wood tops out there that offer some very different results. Maybe better than the AD-II, maybe not, depending on what you like.
As an example, IMHO, a koa topped Ovation gives you all the dependable, worry free, & playablity features you expect with more of a traditional wood box sound. Just my opinion. Your milage may vary.

OFCD?

One thing you need to decide is whether you prefer a wood topped O or an Adamas. Some of the people here talk as tho' an Adamas is it, hands down. As much as I love my Admaii, I tend to disagree. I prefer a wood topped Ovation. You need to play both before making a decision.....

Willa, I haven't played the ADII so this is a review of the 08C, not a comparison. I stepped up to the 08C from a W597 Adamas and prior to that a legend 1117.

The 08C has a slightly wider neck than most Ovations (1 3/4" nut c.f. 1 11/16"). OK that's 1/16" which sounds like nothing, but for me, it is the difference between being able to cleanly fret a standard A chord (and all it's barre chord variations), or slightly brushing against the A or high E strings. That wasn't a problem when strumming, but it was when finger picking. I thought it would take a while to adapt to the wider neck, but it took about 10 minutes.

The contour body took a little getting used to (I went from deep bowl to medium bowl to the contour), but now that I'm used to it, I love it. The contour bowl forces the guitar upright so that the fretboard is perpendicular to the ground, which suits my playing style for both right and left hands.

The 08C is incredibly crisp in tone. I spent a few nights with Flacky's 07C when I stayed at his house for a conference. The 07C is a lovely guitar but sounds muddy compared to the 08C.

The VIP preamp is much maligned on this board. My gripe is that you need to plug it in to use the tuner (which moron decided that was a good idea?), but I like the ability to blend in a filter which makes it sound like a guitar recorded in a studio with a high quality microphone. While you can buy a box to do the same thing (e.g. Zoom) it is handy to have it all in the guitar.

And on a totally subjective (emotional) level, I've really bonded with the 08C in a way I never did with the W597 (but did with the 1117). This guitar will prised out of my cold dead hands.
