Someone in South Dakota won the FLORIDA powerball drawing!...$232,000,000.00

Was it you, Alison? Can't you buy the whole state for $132 million and have $100 million to spare?

The person who won bought the ticket in (I couldn't make this up) Winner, S.D. That is in the south central part of the state, very close to the Rosebud Indian Reservation where poverty is the norm. No on has claimed the money yet, but there is speculation that it is a local family and not some tourist passing through. Whoever it is, I am very happy for them.

I WAS thinking about it this morning when I heard about it. What would I do if I HAD won? Say they took half for taxes - that's still over 100 million. I can think of at least ten people back east who I would want to give a million to. I can think of at least ten more here that I would want to give a million to. I can think of several on this board I would want to give a million to. I would keep a million for myself. The rest would go to some hand picked charities, like W.E.A.V.E. (Women escaping a violent environment) and Tonia's animal sanctuary here in town. I'd like to help as many people and animals as I could. There is so much suffering in the world. Another consideration would be, the sooner I gave it away, the sooner they'd leave me in peace. But yeah, I would use a portion of my million to fly you all here for next summer's gathering.

My wife and I were passing through Mass. on the way back from our Maine vacation a few years back. Had to stop for gas and noticed the lottery was around $200 mil. Since we had NEVER played before, we went inside and asked the attendant what to do and how we would know if we'd won. She said we had to watch the announcement on TV. We told her we were from Pa., not Mass. She didn't know what to say so we left w/o buying a ticket.

It could have been us. Oh well.

We can buy them in Colorado, too. I bought one this week. I lost. Again.

I almost won, but I forgot to buy my ticket. I would have bought everyone on the forum a set of strings and a few picks.

the first thing you do is hire an accountant to tell you how to keep most of it and to act as your spokesman so you can stay unidentified for when everybody comes around with their hand out. You can't give somebody a mil, even after you've paid taxes on it, anything over 22000 there is a gift tax the person has to pay. All kinds of wonderful spoo like that.

Then a financial manager, or more likely, a financial management firm, possibly a publicist or somebody in public relations, a good tax attorney, and depending upon how well these folks do their jobs, a body guard. Just managing any significant part of that kind of money requires a team of full-time professionals.

I'd Spend 1/4 of it on Booze
1/4 of it on Women
1/4 of it on Guitars
Then I'd just blow the rest...
