Finally got around to an 'Iffy Beauty Treatment' for my KA17. All has went well with the exception of two of the classical nylon string posts/barrels being fatally cracked.

Seems that the barrels and posts are odd sizes and I can't find suitable replacements. I'd replace the tuners themselves, but the original mounting plates have asymmetrical mounting holes. Would hate to redrill, but if I have to...

So, does anyone have any suitable barrels/tuners or know of a source?

TIA

I would just remove all 6 barrels and run it with bare posts. You're playing steels anyway, right?

Dave,

I think I'll superglue the barrels before I go with bare posts. I just have an issue with the mental picture.

BTW, the sustain and resonance, especially the lower strings, is unbelievable. I know that Alison didn't care for the plastic student guitar, but, day-um, they're awesome!

Woody,

Not sure... The issue isn't the post spacing. It's the mounting plate holes.

Which brand are those? Did they fit the original mount pattern?

I do have a pair, purchased from Dave, that fits except the mount hole pattern.

At least one (maybe two) of the plastic barrels on my Academy look to be in terrible shape....
Mine came with Silk-n-Steel strings on it, and I thought that the barrel(s) would disintegrate once I took the strings off. They didn't.
I put EJ16's on there.

My point being, did you try to just restring it and use them anyway?
Or are your really freaked by the appearance?

No. One of the barrels had the 'end cap' missing with cracks else where and falling apart. Another just has the cracks.

I'll try the super glue method before mounting a different pattern set.

Superglue won't bond well to that plastic. Got the same problem.
