Location: SoCal | We all know that Ovations and have their own particular sound. But at times, that sound has been compared to other guitars. I remember when the 30th CL came out. Al compared it to a D28. What he was saying was that it had a deep warm sound, and he was right.
But on Memorial Day, Mrs. MoodyRN and I were at the home of some of our best friends. He's a great guitar/mando/bass player and I was playing a Gibson J-45 that he owns. I then put it down (great guitar) and picked up my rebuilt Legend (A braced top). And I was amazed at just how similar they sounded.
The hell with Martin comparisons... they sound more like Gibsons! But mostly, they sound like themselves...... |

Location: Cincinnati | I've never done a side by side comparison, but my 30th CL sounds better than any regular D28 I've played. The D28, and D35, sound dull to me. But I also know it's a matter of personal taste. |

Location: Michigan | I cant really find a comparison for my 1767. It has a smooth balanced tone that is unique to anything else I have played. The newer 2077 has a very bright treble and deep bass and to me it was more like a taylor than the 1767. It was very nice and really caught my attention but in the end I prefered the 1767s sound. Quite unique and pleasing to me. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I'm guilty of this myself, but I have to stand back and chuckle when we talk about a certain brands "sound". How in the hell can an entire line of guitars have a "sound"? Take Martin for example, although the same applies to Taylor, Collings, Gibson, Takamine etc. Martin makes a HUGE array of guitars different sizes, shapes, top woods, back woods, bracing, etc. And they all have a "Martin Sound" ? Bullshit.
If anything Ovation would be probably the only brand you could say has "a sound" because with only a few exceptions they all have the same size soundboard and they all have the same plastic back material.
Me? I just buy stuff based on how it looks. |

Location: SoCal | All I said was that there was a remarkable similarity in the sound between my Legend and a J-45. I had never heard it before.
And what's interesting about Ovations is that while there are different soundhole configurations, different bracing patterns, and different bowl depths, they have a similarity of tone while still sounding different. My 87C, Legend, and OFC'er (ding!) all sound very different, but it's all based on a similar tone...... |
