my stepson's car is a 1993 honda accord. hondas are the #1 stolen vehicle in hawaii. i posted the theft in our local craiglist a couple days ago. someone replied that they know of a chop shop up in Mountain View, near Volcano, where the stolen cars are dismantled within a couple hours and parted out.
seems the cops could locate the chop shop, at least. the responder did not know the exact location.

since my stepson was laid off, he had allowed his insurance, registration and safety check to expire and was risking driving around illegally anyway. so he has no recourse. just a lesson hard learned.

If this is the case, lanaki, that car was way gone by the time you reported it. Sorry. There are some good cops out there......really.

That could be a real possiblity, unfortunately. Or they know and just turn their heads and take a cut.

That's one job I wouldn't want. I'm sure that most, if not nearly all, law enforcement are AOK+. But I did have a run in with one crooked cop. At least he got 'caught' and is now serving time in the state pen...

Good! I hate crooked cops, gives us all a bad name.

I'm a retired cop from a rather large MD agency
and I've seen too much I'd rather be here, much more pleasant.
I still have flashbacks. Had one last night

update on the stolen car:

got a call at 7am on tuesday. caller ID reads "Police Dept." man asks for jared, my step-son, who is fast asleep. i couldn't help but wonder what sort of foolishness he got involved in as i woke him telling him the cops wanted to talk to him. definitely not a pleasant awakening and he certainly looked as if he was experiencing a bad dream. cop tells him they need him to come down to the station and identify his car. we go down there and initially don't think it's his. new paint job, nice chrome wheels and newer tires. cop says the VIN matches the stolen one we reported. cop opens the car and we recognize the interior by its characteristics. however, it is now trashy inside and full of apparently stolen electronic merchandise, bags of cocaine and crack rocks, pills and marijuana. coins everywhere as well as baby carseats, kids DVDs, and cigarette butts. cops take out everything jared says is not his and we bring the car home. muffler had been repaired, new brakes all around. i told jared, "see, God heard your prayers to get your car back and He saw to it that all those things needing fixed got done too!".
we cleaned it up and found more drugs the cops didn't collect. my shop-vac contained alot of interesting paraphernalia that got vacuumed up.
the car looks great! seems the driver ran a red light early tuesday morning and then sped away from the cop that attempted to pull him over. he is now in custody with several charges pending. jared says he has a "marked" car now and wants to get rid of it soon. his older brother, who lives on another island, will probably buy it.

Congrats, Randy. I didn't read this thread before, because I was in Germany. Joking aside, car thieves steal popular cars because they are tough for the cops to spot. When I was in Hawaii years ago, everyone drove a red Nissan, because that was one of the most popular rental cars.
Your stepson's was probably painted right away to make the description useless.

Honda Civics from the 1990's are regularly stolen in New York. The kids fix them up. They pretend their in Too fast, too furious. Go figure. I have a civic from that era, and I've kids admiring it like it's porche! It's weird but fun.
