Hi there,
I am looking to buy an Ovation 1997 Collector, and found one on the web.
The seller sent me some pics, and it appears that the guitar has what seems to be a superficial crack.
Here the pic of the crack :

What your opinion about that issue ?
(Hoping that you can look at the pic...)

Ask John Budney to give you a price on filling and polishing it.

Hi Pez, thank you for answering, but I am located in French Polynesia, and I don't know anybody here able to do that.
The crack don't reach the wood according to the seller. But do it have an incidence upon the sound ?

I have no idea. If it is a cracked top then you either patch it up (cheaper option) or have the top replaced (not cheap). I would send pics to Kim and/or John at Ovation and let the experts answer.

That's just a finish crack, from impact by the look of the direction of it.

I don't think it will affect the guitar overall because it is not along the grain of the wood, will probably run to the bridge.

But as was said not cheap.

It looks like a finish crack only - as AJ says it runs partially across the grain. A through crack would follow the grain.

Finish cracks can be repaired fairly easily, although it's almost impossible to hide one completely on a natural finish guitar. Detailed instructions for doing so are in the FAQ , the 11th Q/A.

A finish crack isn't going to effect the sound or stability of the guitar at all; but it certainly would be a bargaining point on negotiating a better price.

OK, I thank you all : regarding to the crack, and because the natural finish of the guitar, I won't repair it by myself.
I should have to give the guitar to a professional, or leave it as it, so not so cheap...
If the seller doesn't want to negociate a better price, I'll let the guitar go.
Again, thanks a lot guys !

Hollymood.

The Music Outlet in Severville TN has one of those. I say and played it Firday. Appeared to be very very nice. If I had known someone was looking for one I would have really looked at it Hard. The lighting in the store is not great and I didnt play it long. I think Trader Jim and a few others have been to that store. I am usually up that way once a month and usually stop in and take a look around.
Might be some other members closer than me that could give you a better review if your interested. I think the hang tag said 699 but not sure and I didnt ask since I wasnt interested in buying.
Good look
James

John told me super glue in the cracks and then buff them out. It will seal them and protect against them moving further but will not hide them.

Rich... its not a hard repair. I did it with a chip in my Balladeer. I would suggest going to a hobby shop and getting a thinner Superglue and a thicker one. Carefully filling the crack with the thinner glue, letting it seep in. Do it in layers, Letting each harden. Once close to level, use the thicker glue to create a higher ridge of glue over the length of the crack. Again, let harden. Then tape off and wet sand level, (I used 1200 grit for my final wet sanding). Then polish and buff with McGuire's X. When you are done the crack, do the whole top just to even out the gloss. You should be pleasantly surprised when you are done.

It may not hide the crack, but it will stop it from growing.
