Location: Oregon | I've been playing my Magnum II consistently for 25 years. Last week at pracice, my amp smoked and the Magnum popped right after. It was over for my electronics. However, the EQ and volume pot were all noisy, so I've decided to upgrade the electronics. I thought about replacing the pickups, but I'm not sure I can size something new, besides, the pups are good. Anyone have any ideas for new electronics? I want to have some sort of eq function. I can cut my own pickguard. Not willing to buy another brand of bass. My Magnum has been with me so long it's more of a partner, not an instrument. Open to any ideas. Thx.--Den |

Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | As for the electronics define "all over for the electronics" More than 80% of all "electronic" problems are solved easily because they are actually "physical" problems. Cold solder joints, or just joints that let go from vibration. Worn connections, etc etc etc... If you want to remove the pickguard and pickup assembly and send it to me I can diagnose, and possibly repair as I have spare parts from units that actually did fry over the years.
As for the pickups... For my money, the Magnum pickups are some of the best available.
If you really want to "upgrade" the electronics, I'd actually recommend just going passive, effectively turning it into a Magnum I. No more batteries and for all intents and purposes the same tone. While the active does give a bit more enhance/control of the tone, there is some noise introduced, and well.... I find for most normal playing... a vol and tone control works just fine.
In fact, with Vols and Tones you can blend the sounds of the two pickups more, and I prefer that control to the EQ.
