Anybody planning to attend the Guitar Town event at Copper Mountain, Colorado? My son and I will be there the morning of August 8. I've never gone so any tips from someone who's been there before would be appreciated.

May have to go up and see Duane Eddy myself on Sunday. Dale, will you be driving through Denver on your way up?

Don't miss Tommy Emmanuel.
Been to Copper Mtn many times skiing in my healthy past. Can't miss it....right off I-70. Parking should be easy and adequate.
Should be beautiful, enjoy

Preston Reed and Pete Huttlinger are no slouches, either.

Pete Huttlinger was doing seminars at Musicfest here a couple weeks ago. Nice guy and a hot player!

Almost brought him home for dinner, seems he couldn't get anything but peanut butter sandwiches at the festival.....

Get his album 'Finger Picking Wonder' which is not as self-absorbed as the title intimates. It's a whole album of his arrangements for one guitar of Stevie Wonder tunes.

He also does fantastic lessons on Homespun Tapes. He goes through clear explanations of what he is doing, but doesn't get too boring with the details.
He will attend private parties. I was told one of his fans brought him out here a couple years ago and noticed a couple of private events on his calendar.
I just looked at the rest of the bios for Guitar Town. Everyone is top notch. Wish I could attend.

Not sure I can get away for much more of it, but I'll have to check out the schedule more closely. I wonder if the night jams will include everybody in the line-up earlier in the day?

Yes, my son and I will be driving through on I-70. We're staying at Copper Mountain the night of the 7th and departing some time after lunch for Dinosaur National Monument. We're back in Denver on August 12 for the Rockies/Pirates game and staying overnight.

Check to see if Oakley, Kansas still has the world's largest prairie dog. You can report back privately.
It sounds like you will miss much of the Guitar Town festivities. Looks like it goes all day Saturday and Sunday.

I don't know if that's still Oakley's claim to fame. Yes, I will be missing a lot of Guitar Town. It's part of a bigger vacation trip for my son and me. Oddly enough, it was Adam's idea to make the Guitar Town stop. And he's a drummer...

Dale, I'll send a PM for a possible get together. I have a complete set of drums in the bandroom plus, ahem, a few guitars and amps.

The band room is worth a stop. Sort of the Las Vegas strips of basements.

Dale, have you done Dinosaur before? It is a very interesting place to see. The main attraction in the park is worth a few hours. It is also worth driving around the park a bit, especially out to the river, though there isn't anything to do but admire the scenery.

Dinosaur Colorado is nothing to see at all. But Vernal UT has several museums worth visiting. So drive right through the Colorado town to the park, then go to Vernal for lodging and other dino attractions.

One thing you MUST do is see the Indian petroglyphs (rock paintings) at the Sadie McConkie Ranch. It is a half hour drive from Vernal and well worth your time. Here's one website about the site http://www.examiner.com/x-2310-Portland-Day-Trips-Examiner~y2009m2d...

Brad: PM Sent.

FlySig: No, I've never been there before. Thanks for the tips on the museums in Vernal and the petroglyphs. We're staying overnight on the 8th and 9th in Rangely, CO. So we've got plenty of time to look around.

Another place worth stopping is Arches National Park and Dead Hourse State Park just outside of Moab. It would be detour on the way to Rangely, or as a day trip out of Rangely. If this sounds like something of interest, check out the maps and take the back road into Moab from Cisco as it follows the Colorado River and takes you through scenic Monument Valley where John Ford filmed some of his epic John Wayne movies.

Brad's right. Going the other direction, I got to Arches right at 7:30 when it opened, took a quick tour, drove up the Colorado from Moab and made it to Keystone by about 2. That was with a missed turn the led me through Moab, which isn't worth seeing. The rest was fantastic scenery.

Well, that's it. I've decided where I'm vacationing next summer. Thanks, guys.
I remember one time in June, we rented a convertible in Denver and drove out to Aspen...absolutely STUNNING!!! So I'm thinking the same thing here. Rent a convertible and drive through Arches and Dead Horse and down the Colorado....WOW!

Say, Dark, if its a gorgeous drive you're looking for, look me up before finalizing your plans. I've led motorcycle tours all over the state and can point you to some canyons that few people outside the locals know about.

My typing sucks. It is Dead Horse Point State Park. Check it out. For my money, the view rivals the Grand Canyon without the crowds.

Looks like I'm going to have to make a follow-up trip next summer to see these other parks.

The plan for THIS year is to drive from Rangely to Manitou Springs via the Royal Gorge. Manitou will be our base of operations for Pike's Peak and Garden of the Gods.

From Manitou Springs, its only a few minutes to Cave of the Winds, which is well worth the trip if you're at all into spelunking (website below). Garden of the Gods can be covered in a drive-through.

Where were you when I was in town? Don't answer that. Sorry I missed you.
