Location: Tennessee | For those already in the know, I know I'm late to the party. For the rest, I discovered this great radio show on Sunday night.
It is called Randy Bachman's Vinyl Tap, and is produced by CBC. I caught it on Sirius at 8pm Pacific on Sunday night. It's a two hour show hosted by Randy. This week he has a Rickenbacker with him and he explained and demonstrated how the trademark Rickenbacker sound was played ... followed up by the various signature songs by the Byrds, Beatles, CCR, Tom Petty, etc. I missed the first half of the show, where he did the same thing with Gretsch guitars. It was very cool. Apparently, every week he takes different guitars and explores how their sound impacted rock music. If you have Sirius, you ought to check it out on the CBC channel. If you live up north and can pull in Canadian stations, you may be able to catch it that way. It's on every week. |

Location: Campbell River, British Columbia | Every show of Randys has a different theme. He's been on the guitar kick for a month or so now...Tele's, Strats, Les Pauls....etc.
At other times it's been 'Vocal groups through pop history' or 'Cover tunes'.
But all the best bits are couched in the "and then I met..." stories. The one about going to England to fight the Who never gets old.....though I'm sure Randy treasures more the time he saw Tina Turner and the Ikettes naked. |

Location: Tennessee | When I was in high school, I saved up my money and bought a Quadraphonic hifi system. The coolest track to demo was "Hand Me Down World" ... when the drums came in at the end of the intro they tracked around the room as Garry Peterson rolled around the kit. Very cool effect. |

I still have my Panasonic Quadraphonic set up in the living room and it continues to sound just fine, although I haven't had anything to put into the 8-track for decades. Sure the "TCoB" and "You Ain't Seen Nuthin' Yet" the radio hits were without a doubt but there were a lot of others where he had some great jazz/rock progressions going. He was/is just a great guitarist IMHO. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | A college roommate had a quadrophonic stereo, but fortunately I couldn't afford anything that modern, so we'd just listen to his stuff. I think he had an 8 track, too. I'm glad to say I never owned one of those. I figured out that cassettes were the way to go. Only problem was that when the cassette tape got all tangled up, the hole was a lot smaller to try to fish it out of the stereo. |
