Kim Kellor from Ovation gave me a tip on a place to get replacement chips for the Magnum II.

Mouser Electronics makes chips that will replace the Motorola MC3476P chips in the Magnum II. You can order online. Here's the info.

www.mouser.com
P# 526-NTE944M (you'll need 8 chips)

Do we have stickies here? That's the sort of useful info that needs to be immortalised somewhere. Nice find, Denny. :)

I save 'favorite' guitar links in a Firefox 'guitar' folder' with model #/category sub-folders.

Great info Denny...

Thanks, All.
My chips arrive in 2 days. At that point I'm going to resurrect my Mag2. I'll let you know if these chips end up being great or not.--Den

If they're modern substitutes, there's every likelihood that they'll be better in pretty much all respects. I'm betting you can look forward to a lower noise floor, faster slew rates, lower distortion, greater stability, less current drain on your battery - you name it! :)

I rec'd the op amps last night. They WORK!!!! My Mag2 lives!!

It seems to have a bit more power, but that could just be my excitement in the fact that I'm back up and running. Not sure. I didn't mess around, I replaced all 8 op amps for safety. (I also ordered an add'l 8 just in case there's ever a future problem). Mouser was also easy to deal with. No ugly surprises.

At the advice of Kim @ Ovation, I've ordered some Craig Deoxit to clean up and quiet my pot/sliders. I'll report on that as well once I've completed that task.

Use the Deoxit or other cleaner sparingly- too much can make sliders feel rough- I know 'cause I've used too much too many times! Then you have to use something like CAIG Fader Lube to smooth them out again.

Just a follow up:

I used deoxit on my Mag2 sliders, pot, and output jack. The pot and the jack cleaned up great with no noise. The deoxit ate the grease in my sliders and made them too stiff to operate. So, I bought some faderlube. The faderlube freed up the sliders a little bit, but the tactile feel and smooth operation were lost.

However, my buddy is the mgr of the local auto parts store. He swung by my place with some dielectric grease. I tried that in my sliders and it was like a miracle. Tactile feel is restored and the sliders are working great. The EQ is back in operation.

Been a long month having my bass down. Finally glad the repairs are complete.
