I haven't had a Mac crash in so long I just need to ask: do they still have the little bomb icon that shows up?

On the other hand, I do know that the blue screen of death is still pervasive ...

No, no bomb. They have the spinning beach ball of death now:

Never heard of a Mac that could fix itself (although mine makes a mean cup cappucino and gives me a neck rub). No question I'm a huge Mac fanb, but I'll admit there is certainly a lot of hype.

Sorta like when we say that Adamas guitars are bulletproof. I suspect in reality a bullet would have little trouble penetrating a 1687-8.

Would love to see the "Myth Busters" TV show do a Mac/PC thing.

I work with both pc's and macs and what I find truly obnoxious is the Apple arrogance. I recently had to replace a keyboard which was under warranty. Simple one in-one out move. I called the Apple store where we bought the mac and was told that I could not just walk in, I would have to make an "appointment" online. Really? An "appointment"? "Yes, make an appointment and the local store "concierge" will email you confirming your time. Then, you can come in and talk to a Mac GENIUS to replace the keyboard."

So, when I was approved to walk in, I was told that if I needed a keyboard that day, I would have to buy one and then return it when my warranted keyboard came in. I'm thinking "Hmm...they're going to send me a refurbished keyboard and when I bring this one back in after 5 days with nothing wrong with it, they're going to re-package this one up and sell it as refurbished. Why can't I just keep THIS one?" but no go. I'd have to come back in 5 days to get my new refurbished keyboard.

Yeah. Genius.

understand that part of what I was saying is tongue in cheek.

I have worked with apples since the IIc and pc's since the 8086's and the ibm 360 is what I learned on.

so I have a bunch of experience with both platforms.
my biggest gripe is that everyone touts mac as the perfect machine. it is not.

I bought what I thought would be a plug and play recording setup and within 3 days the G4 was going squirrely on me.
Believe me I am very analytical and systematic in how I address and solve these sorts of problems.
this problem is beyond my scope of expertise.

I want to thank fletcher for stepping up e mailing me some solutions and offering me a system to replace this non working one.

My wife has a mac, I have a pc. I've never thought her computer was easy to operate. Once you KNOW how to do something on it, it becomes easy. Figuring out out to do something on it is a different story. They are no intuitive.

When my dad got a mac, he was telling me how great they are and how in 20 minutes you're up and running and on the internet. Well, 2 hours later he was looking for a community college class so he could learn how to use his "intuitive" mac....

Amen!

The woman down the hall from me would often ask me to help her with computer problems.
She recently asked for my help with a Mac laptop that she borrowed from her son.
I could not figure-out how to work the durn thing.
After looking at it for few moments I asked, "This is a Mac, huh?"
At which time I told her that I could do nothing for her.
[After I had finally figured-out how to fix her Vista computer that she had borrowed from her brother]
