Seriously thinking of getting a Seagull Peppino D'Agnotino from Elderly...

I've played a number of them and compared them side by side with other comparably priced guitars. Build quality is nice, but so far I've been underwhelmed by their tone in direct comparison to Larrivees, Martins, Taks, and yes even Taylors ;)

YMMV

I nearly got busted by the Mexican Federales for burying one along the beach in Bahia de Los Angeles back in March of '68.

Agreed. The ones I played sounded shallow and boxy. For the money I would get a Blueridge and have Elderly put a preamp in it if you need to plug it in.

Every Blueridge I've tried has trounced other guitars in its price class. They are nice.

Don't remember ever playing a Blueridge. I'll have to try one now.

But every Seagull I've ever picked up has been great....

Blueridge seem to make only (or at least specialise in) guitars for bluegrass, by that I mean for flat picking and strumming backup.

I do not flatpick or strum. I play fingerstyle so I don't thinkt the blueridge are best suited to my style.

Peppino is one of the worlds greatest contemporary fingerstylists and he plays a Seagull so they cannot be all that bad, no? In fact he plays his Seagull signature, that's the one I'm thinking of trying.

Only thing to do is try it.

I have a Norman which is made at the same place - not the same standard but it's very nicely crafted for a $400 dollar guitar and sounds good - the only reason I bought it was because I thought it deserved a good home and I just couldn't leave it behind.

Sadly there are none of those in the UK so as usual I'm gambling on shipping one in to try it for myself. If I don't like it then out it goes, hopefully without a great deal of loss.

I've love to live in Canada, ah the open spaces!

I had some friends move to Canada a while back they said they were near Toronto, turns out they were 5 hours drive from Toronto and that's considered near. You drive 5 hours in any direction in England and you and up in the sea!

Yeah, I've been in the UK quite a bit.

Lots of big sky and open space here. I'm living in Toronto now but don't like it much or even regard it as part of Canada. I grew up in a farm town of less than 2,000 people and as kids we owned the place.

Considering the quality of foreign protoplasm I see staggering around Toronto it can't be that difficult to get in - hell most of them aren't proficient in any language never mind English..lol

You asked for opinions...YMMV.
Here's another one - I'd venture to say that with a setup like that, a competent engineer, and that playing ability even an Esteban would sound good on a YT clip.

That's the good kind of Seagul.
The other kind Wayne owns.

I've played a few low end seabirds at GC and others places. I thought all were very good for the money. They were all cedar tops and have a more mellow/soft tone. But the last time I had an extra $400.00 laying around for a guitar I bought a used 1111.

dweeze,
because you are in europe, you should seek out a stanford guitar. blueridges are excellent for the money, however, stanfords, which are made in china also, blow them away. a few vagabond stanfords made it to the U.S., but they are marketed primarily in europe and under the direction/design of furch guitars in belgium.

here\'s a clip of a round shouldered dread stanford as played by michael wong. his recording setup catches the
actual rich acoustic sound of this guitar. i own a stanford dread. best sounding wood box i've ever played. stanford makes some incredible OM sized boxes also and all have a 1 3/4" nut.

As I understand it some Stanfords are made in China, a significant amount are still made in the Czech Republic. Furch's other brand Stonebridge, which are made exclusively in Checkoslovakia are excellent too. Furch is also producing guitars for whoever now owns the Larson and Prairie State brands. The samples I've seen were very impressive.

I can pick up a 2nd hand Seagull Artist Peppino for £800 all in. Yeah I don't know what it's like but I think I'm willing to take a punt.
