I've had several Ovations go through my hands with the standard top cracks, and try as I might, cleating, touching up, due diligence, all that, I have yet to repair one so it doesn't show. I know that's a difficult thing to accomplish on any guitar but I seem to bat zero with Ovations. Lately I've had thoughts of pulling a rough Ovation off ebay and refinishing the top in some funky color. Too many choices went through my head to name them all and I have no idea what I will eventually do... one minute I'm picturing '71 Dodge Challenger Plum Crazy, next minute it's fluorescent green, next it's that nice sedate ivory color I've seen on late model Chrysler products. I would never refinish a 'good' guitar just on a lark; and by good I mean one that should be touched up an left as original as possible. I figured there were enough tortured 70s or 80s Balladeers around that I could indulge without committing a mortal sin. I even contacted Old Man Arthur about a cheap 1112 I sold him a couple years ago. That was arguably one of the nicest sounding O's I've owned, but it also had some ugly repairs. Alas, it was gone. I toyed with the idea of the '67 shiny bowl that ended today on ebay but I would have been ethically obliged to keep it correct as possible so the metalflake fuschia idea was out. For $86 I guess I can fire up the compressor and make this one 'special'. No danger of reducing any collector value and it might just end up being an eye catcher. Next project

Turned out the car was originally Alpine White so I re-did it that way. I think it'd be cool to have a Plum Crazy colored Ovation. ksdaddy, I might even hunt you up if I ever find a beater cheap enough.

They did have silver, red, and blue. Nothing did anything for me. I'm not crazy about using a spray can for the color coat but as long as the spray gun clear lacquer works with it, I guess it'd be okay. White Ovations turn my crank but I already have an old Academy so that's covered. I guess part of it depends on how smooth I can get the top, which I won't know for a while. I might want to avoid dark colors because they would show more of the flaws.... garbage in, garbage out and all that. Testor's makes Plum Crazy in small 3 oz lacquer cans so that might be an easy way to get the color on it. I'll change my mind 3,412 times before I'm done.

The epoxy repair, while messy, will clean up fine. The bridge is pulled up a tiny bit in the middle. Anyone know if these are glued and bolted or just bolted? The white on the top has yellowed sexily like an old Fender but between the epoxy mess and the shadow of some long-gone striping or stickers, it's got to go. Nothing decided on the color though. The saddle and nut will be replaced with bone. I don't know what was original equipment in '79 but it currently has cheap plastic.
