Although I have one of the electronic gizmos, I prefer to pound with a hammer until I hear something solid and then drive a nail into it. I've found it's a much more accurate way of finding a true stud.

In fact, the stud detectors are about as accurate as the weather forecasters around here. I ultimately used your method, which always works.

There's so much insight into guitars here, especially Ovations. How thought provoking and informative. I've learned, I see the light. Now I know what I've been doing wrong. You beast! ... That way I could find a stud by tapping on the wall with my fingers as opposed to a hammer which can leave marks (and sometimes good size ones). He was great at it and I don't recall one time when he missed a stud. When I was growing up he told me he had X-ray vision (which was one of the several things that kept me in line when I was sent to my room). I'm not nearly as good as he was at it but I find it's as good as a hammer these days and training the ears didn't hurt when I started playing guitar either.
