I am currently a closing manager for the local grocery store here in town and have to do the work of two for starvation wages. (I lost my 'REAL' job last March when the plant closed.) But to generate extra income to support my music habit, I started teaching guitar at a tiny little studio here. Several weeks ago, the owner of the studio made me a partner so my wages their effectively doubled. I now make VERY good hourly wages teaching, but it is a poor community and not many students. Well, my partner came into the store last night and told me the local tribe here wants to hire us to teach on the Rez... I may be getting a little too excited, but I am thinking many students? Federal money? Subsidies? A way out of that bloody store?!?!?!? Perhaps enough income to buy an Adamas next year?!?!?!?!? Wish me LUCK!!!! :D :D :D

That's great David! Just a warning though, if the folks on the Rez out there are as poor as those here on Pine Ridge or the Rosebud, you will be dealing with kids who either have no guitars, have worse than Walmart guitars, or possibly (and I hate to say this) guitars that were once OK, and have now been trashed. I had a guy come in just yesterday with a kids sized Harmony that he had "spent good money on", ($40) and the neighbor kid grabbed it and threw it. So now his son has a broken guitar that was never any good to begin with. He wanted me to fix it so his son could take lessons.

I will tell you though, that you will get tremendous satisfaction in finding the talented ones and helping them along. You might be tempted to do a group lesson thing, but I would advise against that. It hardly ever works out because some will practice and some won't. After about the second or third lesson, they are already at such different levels that no one will make any progress.

So good luck, and please keep us informed.

Great! Best of luck with it. Even if it doesn't make you rich I'm sure the experience will be priceless.

It's the Chehalis Tribe...near Oakville. The tribe is doing rather well...Their casino and the Great Wolf Lodge are bringing in lots of revenue for them. I don't know yet, but I think they want me to do a 'group' lesson thing and that can be very problematic for the reason already mentioned. But I won't know anything until after the meeting tomorrow. I am currently working to locate reasonably priced acoustic guitars that are at least playable for them. I thought I had found a source and one of my students got one, but then the store ran out and the owner has been unable to get more of them in...drat. Oh well, we shall see what tomorrow brings.

it's either a type of sandwich or a very admirable person. in this case, the latter is appropriate. i hope the music you teach these kids will bring about a direct connection between your souls.
