A tiny ding here, sweat discoloration there, pick scratches that you see when the lighting hits the guitar the right (wrong) way, etc... Being a lover of the textured tops myself, I have to resign myself to the fact that any moderate amount of playing is going to make the guitar look used. Ever notice the pick scratches are hardly even on the pickguard if your guitar has one? Hence the snot globs on the Adamases that extend below the area where a pickguard typically ends. I wish they put those on all guitars. Anyway, my point is, unless you have a guitar meant to hang and display, I say get used to it. I do my best playing when I forget about the dings and scuffs and just play. On the other extreme, I like seeing Clapton and SRV (God rest his soul) playing their beat up scratched beyond all recognition strats. Sometimes the wear and tear adds charm to the guitar. I also noticed it's usually us, not the audience, who even notices these minor flaws. If you have the luxury of having a display guitar and a playing guitar, then pamper the display guitar. Send it to mama to get her touched up. Personally, I hate having to hold back when I play. I've tried. I had a display guitar once that I couldn't stop staring at. I'd play it gently, conscious of every time the pick touched the surface, and I'd wipe the thing down constantly. It wasn't too bad, but I have to admit the real fun is in picking up a tank of a guitar and playing your heart out. Some guitars hide the wear and tear better than others. I mentioned the snot glob. Combine this with a burst color and the gold flek, and the guitar can stay new looking for decades. Bottom line: do you want to display it, or just play it? (Play it well, and no one else will even care about the defect except you!)

I prefer to change out any of the Gold tuners to an Ivoroid mainly because I can't see the fingerprints on the Ivoroid. For the Gold paint issue - would the occasional coating of Wax do any good? And Moody, the first step in recovery is for me to admit that you have a problem...

That is simply delicious. How very christian. You, sir, are my new hero.Yeah, it was raining; lots of traffic; and now I'm selling it...

I have friends who use 'wm all the time, and the problem goes away. It's really a cheap preventative measure. Pay a little early, or pay a lot later for the repair. It's kinda' like the idea of regularly changing the oil in your car ... it pays off in the end.
