Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | I bought several Hendrix DVD's a while back...I thought I had watched them all but yesterday discovered I had not: "Experience Jimi Hendrix" from 2001 has some nice video of some early concert footage. Included is footage from Stockholm Sweden Jan. 9, 1969...The tape from the SVT Sweden television show Number Nine...
It features a smoking version of "Red House" w/Jimi playing a white 1968 Gibson SG Custom 3 pickup guitar. To my ear, this is some of the best blues I have ever heard Hendrix play (seriously good stuff). He goes into a version of "Sunshine of Your Love" next and seems to have a little trouble getting the controls of the SG to get the sound he was wanting...he was in the process of switching to his obligatory Strat but the Host bid the audience goodnight...he relents and calls for the band to come back but you can tell they were not happy and they did not come back on...If you can find this DVD, the version of "Red House" is worth the cost of the DVD alone IMHO.
Also, the guitar is featured in Heatley's book "Jimi Hendrix Gear" (also a cool read...great pic's) on pg. 116/17.
While I appreciate what Hendrix did for R&R I was not very impressed with him at the time...his antic's seemed over the top (guess it was show business)...but this is different: just seriously good guitar playing w/great Gibson/Marshall tone...Nice!
Enjoy! |

Location: Blue Ridge Mountains | Here is another classic version: Red House @ Woodstock
Jimi was defiantly more at home with the Strat...
I still like the Stockholm version better: it's more raw and the tone of the SG is great! |
