Bobby Gibson moved here to central Oregon not long ago. ( www.bobbygibson.com check out his gallery!) I picked up one of his cards when I picked up my new '59 Gretsch Chet Atkins re-issue 6120 in Bend. I emailed him a few weeks ago & asked if he would consider helping a self taught thumb picker with some lessons. I figured the worst that could happen would be I'd never hear back from him. But I did. He said to meet him at the music store in Redmond & we'd talk it over. So went & met him. After we BS'ed a while he said to pick him a tune so I played him me "Readers Digest" version of Trambone. Apparently he seemed to think there was a glimmer of hope for me so we spent a couple of hours in a sound room at the store. It was really fantastic to sit down with a guy that can play that well & have him show me how he does what he does so well.

I practiced what he showed me until my pickin' fingers were raw. When I was still working in the body shop there was no way I could have fingernails so I used my fingertips. I developed some callouses but they couldn't hold up to more than an hour or so a day. Now that I'm retired I can play all day if I want to. Yesterday I went & had three fake fingernails stuck on my pickin' fingers. What a difference! Now I have three sissyfingers but man does it make it easier to pick! Besides being a fantastic guitar player Bobby turned out to be a heck of a nice guy. I can't wait until my next lesson!
