Have owned/played Ovations for a long time. My first one I got from a school friend and swapped him an electric sitar for it. Sold it a few years later to buy this one below because I wanted one with build-in electronics. I had been using a Barcus-Berry PUP stuck to the top of my first one. After I sold my first one, the guy I sold it to told me that it turned out to be a one-off made from a lower-line body with a top-of-the-line neck on it from 1970 or so. I offered to buy it back but he'd already sold it to a dealer to buy a fish tank :)
Anyway...I bought this one new in, I think, 1976 or '77 at The House of Guitars in Rochester, NY. I think it was the first year they did the Anniversary Model and this was the first the HOG got in that I had reserved (says "The Anniversary" on the label and Model 1657-7; brown bowl. Did they make many of these? Were all of these the same color?
The pickup in the soundhole is a prototype of something Lane Poor gave me that he made in the early 90s. I don't know if he made many but it's a really clever design and sounds great. That little screw on top locks it into place after you rotate it in the soundhole to find your sweet spot.
The other Ovation in the one photo below is a 1984 beater that has a cracked soundboard (from bridge to tail) but still plays OK. My GF got it for free when she was working a job taking all the PA and lighting out of The Downtown, a popular club on Long Island after the town had it shut down. This was the guitar hanging on the the wall behind the bar that some bands signed. It's good for hauling out in the sun and beach.
Here are some pics....
