Anyone ever play a Mando GuitarH? Vox and Phantom make one and I've been curious about them. I like mandolin (and have owned an MM68) but have found the fret board is too freakin small. The mando guitar uses the same cord fingering as a guitar and has a neck much wider than a mandolin. So in theory, it should be a pretty cool instrument. But, I'd sure like some real world advice on this unique instrument.

Thanks.

Jim

I believe that it was Hammertone who made the first and best known Octave 12 string.
I own one that is based on the Hammertone but was custom built by Teos .

By custom built I refer to only the wood used and hardware used. The basic guitar is what it is and you can get a baseline model or one that is a bit more spiffy.

Plays like a dream and adds an interesting sound to some of the recordings I do. It can definitely take the place of a mando in some situations without having to learn all the new fingerings.

You will find that a 12 string mandoguitar is also a bit cramped to play. It is still a very small neck when you consider 12 strings and the short scale lends itself to being a bit tough to play bar chords up the neck.

Here's a picture of Mark from Boise playing it.

Very very happy with the Teos and being able to converse with the builder throughout the process was a big plus for me.
The build quality is exceptional and it is one of the best guitar purchases I have made in terms of uniqueness and fun to play.

Very much like the Tacoma Papoose (stock or Butchered) which is A scaled as though you capoed at the fifth fret.

Yes, Mark does look happy, as he deserves to be!

Mike, Sara was looking over my shoulder while I was reading this post and said, "Oh look, didn't your friend Mike have metal guitar playing dogs like that?"

anyway, this is my guitarolin attached to a guitar too. It's just an octave neck, but it kinda has a mando tone to it.
