as I found an interesting offer (2778 LX Elite, 600,- Euros, - yes, Ovations are more expensive in Europe :( ), I'd be happy to hear your opinion how you value a 2778 LX in comparison to my 98er Collectors?
Two main differences are the 2778's contour bowl and the modern OP. But what about differences playing unplugged? Any other important facts to know?
Just to keep the posting short: Will the 2778 be an improvement - or am I just suffering from a guitar collector's syndrome? ;)

| Very different guitars, you'll probably notice a tonal difference. The 98C has a flamed maple top, while the 2778 has a Sitka spruce top; the contour bowl has a slightly different tone as does the LX bracing. Overall I'd predict the 2778 will have more bass, probably a more balanced tone than the brighter sounding 98C. It's impossible to say if one would be an "improvement" over the other, since like or dislike of a particular tone is entirely subjective. Get it, there's nothing wrong with GAS, as long as you can afford it. You can always sell it later if you don't bond with it. |

many thanks for your thoughts; it's always very valuable to hear the opinions of someone who has enough distance to the decision (how do you call it? Buying binge?).
I think I still owe you the short end of the story:
While I was still thinking if I should buy the guitar, it was sold. May the new owner be happy with it.
Meanwhile I got some more money so I'm planning to buy a collectors 2006 that I found in a guitar shop in the Netherlands. It's new, was just standing in their exhibition. The first impression of its sound was very good (at least in my ears) - and besides this, it is a beauty.

I got my CE 2006 two days ago and it is completely different from my CE 1998: Unplugged it is louder, has much more bass and more sustain (ok, that may be because it might have different strings, as the shop restringed it when they put it off the exhibition).
No surprisingly the plugged sound is very different, as the VIP-5 preamp offers much more the 98er's OP 24E.
I like the contour bowl and the wonderful koa top.
But where's light there's also shadow (do you say that in English?): The built-in tuner only works when the guitar is plugged in and I prefer the 98er's "pure" neck.
Just one more question: Where do I find a detailed description of the image select settings of the VIP-5? The user manual just recommends the "configuration insert that came with your guitar". But all I have is the Ovation Owner's Manual, not the recommended "specific electronics owner’s manual". Is it available for download anywhere?
@Patch: Yes, you're right, of course. ;-)
Owning several guitars doesn't have to make sense. It is ok, when it's just fun.
My first question on the 2778 LX was just driven by the stupid idea that someone might say: Forget about the 2778, the 98er is much better (or vice versa)... |

many thanks for the link.
But I'm afraid that manual doesn't answer my questions about the Image Select. As they recommend to "...refer the configuration insert that came with your guitar to see the mics and guitars used to create the images in your guitar."
And sadly I do not have any configuration insert and wasn't able to find it in the internet... ;-(

Location: Boise, Idaho | We didn't get the configuration insert for the LAV Koas, either, probably because it was such a limited edition, but I think someone posted 5 similar images on this site. You might do a search for images or VIP for 2009 and 2008 or contact the dealer that you bought it from. |

When I play with mine on the 07C I just pick #4 with the image slider halfway up.
I think that playing through a really good PA system you might be able to go by configurations listed on a "configuration insert" but otherwise they are all gonna sound different depending on your amp.
Whether I am using a Roland Cube or a Crate CA15...
All that said, they probably gave-up putting in that paper because everybody's would sound different. |

Location: Utah | The VIP uses digital signal processing to emulate the response of different mics and different guitars. So it is a lot more than just different caps on a switch. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | I've got the VIP in 3 of my guitars. I fiddled with the knob, found the setting I liked, didn't know or care what it was called, and haven't touched the knob since. I would rather they had invested the money in a tuner that works on demand. Sorry to piss on the cupcakes, but in my opinion the VIP is a complete waste. |

Location: Utah | Depends on the guitar imo. The VIP is a real nice addition to the 2080. In the UTE it doesn't do a thing that I like. Same goes for the Studio, in some guitars it is heaven but in others it is ho-hum. |
