I have ordered one of these.
Fretlight Demo 1
Fretlight Demo 2

I haven't decided if this is a modern, innovated, new learning tool or a crutch for those lazy asses of the world who do not want to put in the time like our parents did.

I'm thinking and hoping that this will help get me to the next level. I see it helping me to better implement what I have seen in Matt's classes.

It certainly isn't going to teach you good posture. I can't see any of the fretboard when I play.

It's certainly affordable, and seems like it could be a good song learning tool. I looked over the site and thought of some interesting applications.

I dunno... it would seem to suck all of the fun out of learning a song. There's nothing there that a good tab and a recording of the song won't give you.

We'll expect a full report, of course, once you have the guitar in hand...

Anything that gets you excited about playing your instrument is okay by me.

Even if I think you can't beat learning the pentatonic scale and inversions up and down the neck until it's in muscle memory......then slurring it all to hell while you're drunk.

Hey, they thought it up for electronic keyboards, so why not guitars? It's still better than playing video games.

I had one of the acoustic versions when I first started learning. I found the lessons to be helpful, but I never really used the lighted fret board. When you're playing the guitar you can't get a good look at the lights. Also, if you're doing it right, you cover the lights with your fingers. I told myself that after a year, if I were still playing, I would get a good guitar. I ended up with an Ovation 2007 Collectors.

We'll see.
I like the idea of lighting up a scale or chord form either in a "box" form or all the way up the neck. And I like the option to have the root note blink in every position on the neck.

At least this will keep my eyes on the fretboard without haveing to shift my attention from a tab sheet to the guitar.
And I'm thinking that muscle memory will play a big part in a short time.

I purchased a Fretlight two years ago (a b-stock FG-451) to learn on, and still use it to practice (unplugged, sitting in the living room while the kids are watching TV). It's actually a great playing guitar, but I'd bet a nicer electric would sound much better (better pickups, etc.). I don't use the software nearly as much as I used to, but it is still a good learning tool (for me, anyways) to light up a scale pattern and practice with some music (Improviser). I agree, now that I'm much more familiar with reading tab, the MPlayer isn't as useful as it used to be.

I do have an additional piece of software that they no longer make available. Guitarz 6.5 would read a tab ASCII file and light up the fretboard accordingly. Pretty handy if you're used to learning by looking at the fretboard. But, again, once you get used to reading tab, it's not nearly as useful.
