Location: Florida Central Gulf Coast | Last Friday, TJ and I took a trip across Alligator Alley over to Ft. Lauderdale to attend our first guitar show.
What a gathering of guitar artisans! The craftsmanship and artistic talents presented were awe$ome. HERE\'S a list of the exhibitors.
Here's my Cliff Notes (no, not our Cliff) of my impressions. Please note that I'm just a thumb strumming wank wannabe...
- Artistry is not a substitute for tonal quality
- Talented craftsmanship is a true beauty to behold
- Upper (player) sound ports are 'in'
- Theories relating to the previous item are varied and somewhat entertaining
- Watch out woodies, synthetics are creeping well into the 'ya gotta hear this one' arena (Blackbirds)
- Blueberries are no wheres near the git I had envisioned
- Very impressed with Charis
- A young man from Chicago makes an impressive sounding non-braced topped git. Hopefully TJ has his card and can chime in
- Found the perfect electric just for me; a concrete block with a 24 fret neck. The dude had some fantastic gits starting at 6Gs
- TJ was impressed with the Blackbird 'classic'
- He also spent a lot of time on the 'tric side ogling a headless/breakdown 6er model
- I'll NEVER buy a G-Spot bass due to the wank wannabe (no empathy here) that drove us to the far side of the 'tric side of the hall
That's 'nuff for now... other than while feasting at H ters prior to heading home, we decided that a high price tag does not guarantee meeting expectations. Just makes me appreciate the 'O' & 'A's even more!!! |

That luthier with the non braced top was M.E. Brune www.mebrune.com Here's some pics with Iffy playing the guitar in question. BTW, the one in the brief case isn't a train wreck, it's the breakdown one from Strobel guitars.

Thankfully the acoustics/AEs and 'trics were in separate conference halls. The attendee traffic was fairly light while we were there. So, no, it wasn't very noisy on the A/AE side.
What I enjoyed most on the 'trics side was the several exhibitors that had the older gits. There was an ol' chewed up Tele with a $28K tag on it. Sorry, can't remember the year...
For me, the Newport Festival will be a one time shot. Next, I would to attend a major git manufacturers show at some time. |
