Location: GATLINBURG TENNESSEE :) | I recently read a post (ref:Intonation Problems)here that suggested that only light gauge strings should be used on certain model acoustics. Does the use of medium strings encourage bellying on wood tops? |

I had a 1718 with EJ17 Medium strings on there. They were HUGE!
Everybody considers .012 as a standard size for the high E...
But the string companies call these "Light".
D'Addario EJ26 have .011 high E and those are Custom Lights.
So "Light" really ain't that light. |

Location: Utah | Mediums aren't going to hurt the guitar, but they do hurt my fingers.
Some guitars sound better with mediums, some sound better with extra-lights. Use whichever you like best and don't worry about the structure of the guitar. |

Location: Steeler Nation, Hudson Valley Contingent | Probably the most infuriating thing I've discovered now that I own more guitars than is even remotely necessary, is the variations in string types available for experimentation. Between the Martin and the O's, I relentlessly fiddle between brands (D'Addarios, Martin, Martin Marquis, and Elixir, thus far), gauges (light or medium), and composition (bronze, phosphour-bronze, coated, or not).
It's like trying to decide what kind of drinks to have at an open bar! You've got choices of good beer, good wine, and good liquor. Choose wisely, and the combos can be better-than-good. Mix and match too freely, and there can be a terrible, terrible price to pay.
I'm getting a headache just thinking about it.
Maybe I should try some new strings..... :p |

I've considered putting mediums on for a while, but they do put a hurtin' on my fingers. I want to be able to put mediums on my guitar when I grow up.
I just put on a set of light DR Sunbeams (0.12-0.53) and I really like them. |

Location: Winnipeg, Manitoba CANADA | Just as an experiment, I put Martin Ultralites on both my 6 & 12 string Adamas' today... Won't ever do that again!!
They sound fresh, but the tone is nowhere near as good as when they had regular guages on them. Adamas' seem to be the only guitars I know of that benefit from having heavier guage strings on them.
Most of the time, you are using lighter guage strings to maker them easier to play... Adamas' DON'T NEED to be made easier to play (it's built right in already, lol)...
