Does anyone know how rare or not rare these are. It has the Ovation logo as usual but then horizontaly it says Deluxe. The tuning knobs and keys are gold as well as the tremolo. It's cherry red in color.
Just curious.

Fairly rare but they do show up on the 'bay every once in a while. They are the top of the Storm line. But like all Ovations, they don't get the respect they deserve.

Nice guitars and a cool piece of history but a Hamer is a better quality guitar.....

Are you asking about the Thunderhead, vs the Thunderhead deluxe?

If that's the question and if I recall correctly, there isn't any difference.

Cool.Thanks...I've got a couple of Tornados and this Thunderhead Deluxe. The gold tremolo ,gold tuners and gold keys seem to be the main visual difference. I didn't know if the pickups or wood combinations were different.

Thead had DeArmond pickups and wiring assembly, the Toranados had just regular Schaller pickups and a straight ahead wiring plan.

It sounds great except the pots are a little sticky and on top of that,I'm a drummer. It amazes me that the tremolo is in such great condition. It makes me want to play jazz !!

The bound neck on the T-Head (and Deluxe) is a difference from the Tornado series as well.

Has anyone ever seen a NON "Deluxe" THead?

I've owned 6 and all were "deluxe" and I've probably seen another 15-20. Same story.

Catalog says (compared to Thead), that "Thead Deluxe has certain special features". Those special features would seem to be limited to the decal on the headstock.

Ovation used the same "Deluxe" decal on the DB and GCDB guitars. A reliable source told me that when they ordered them the minimum was something like 5000 decals. So they looked around the shop for something else that would look nicely adorned with the gold script. "Hey, Cletus, lookee here, 'zbout we slap em on deez here 'lektricks?"

... and thus Jimbo Hennessey launched the Ovation marketing department.

There are mongrels that have other hardware. I had a blonde one with all chrome hardware.
