Not in my lifetime will I ever be that good. I was just reading a short bio on Larry McNeely, and it turns out that banjo is his main instrument!

Larry was the banjo player on Glen Campbell's Goodtime Hour for a couple of seasons (this video is from that show....'71/'72??)
He replaced John Hartford on the show....
He's probably using several banjo rolls in his guitar pickin'
He was usually very shy on the show (in fact I think he's smiling more in this clip than he did the whole time on the show! :D ) but he could play the hound outta a banjo! (and evidently a guitar too) |

Location: SoCal | The tune is Jerry Reed's The Claw. It's said that if you can't play the intro to it, you can't be a guitar player in Nashville. It's a hard tune and I struggle with it regularly. Reed used forward banjo rolls and backwards ones.
We had, on the board, about 3 years ago, Buddy Blackmon. Buddy played with Jerry (playing banjo and guitar) for several years in the 1980's. Great guy who seemed to fall off the face of the earth.
Reed played a wild-assed finger style that took what Chet Atkins did and took it to the next level. Look him up on youtube. Incredible.
Atkins used to say that no matter where you went int he world, you'd hear a guitar picker working on a Jerry Reed tune. He gave the world a lot of great tunes..... |

(and evidently a guitar too) Thanks! The only time I'd seen Larry was at the very short beginning of a YouTube video of Glen and Jerry doing "Take Me Home Country Roads".
Seems like he is a multi-talented player!

Location: SoCal | Son of a gun! I had found Slater's video and bookmarked it. He's really nailed the feel of the second bridge that I've struggled with for a long time and I've meant to go back and listen and get the feel for it.
Slate plays it real well. In his last 20 years, Jerry slowed down the pace of the tune and played it more like Slater. McNeely is just playing at breakneck speed, even faster I think, than Jerry originally recorded it in 1967. I much more prefer the way Slater is playing it.
By the way, that's a beautiful Kirk Sand that Slater's playing.
