The link to the performance of this lovely song is at the bottom of this post. I can't help it. When the accordian kicks in, I cry like a baby.

Seven Sisters' Rose (A Soldier's Song) lyrics by Nancy Leonard performed by Rudy VanDam

I cannot see the morning lights from the patch of ground where I lay

At night I see the southern cross and the southern sun by day

Sometimes a flock of black birds trace
a path across the sky and other times I find your face in clouds as they float by

My fingers search my pocket for the comfort that is there

Your parting gift the only thing that saves me from despair

A locket with your picture, some strands of golden hair

A seven sisters' rose and a folded paper prayer
A seven sisters' rose and a folded paper prayer

My brother fell before me, I have not seen him since
I made it to the stream beyond the pretty picket fence

An ochre veil subdued the sun at dawn when I awoke

Close thunder pealed like gunfire and the air was set like smoke

I long to lay my weary head in your two lovely arms

To know the warmth of tender touch so far away from home

As soon as I can stand again I'll run the gauntlet through

I'll set my compass by the stars and take me home to you

The moon and I can hear you
at least the wind can cry

I said I'd never leave you and to you I'll never lie

The moon and I can hear you and at least the wind can cry

To such a love eternity could never be denied
to such a love eternity could never be denied

(Get out the hankies and enjoy ...)

SEVEN SISTERS\' ROSE

Nice post. I think I like it, had some trouble engaging with the guy's performance. Have to listen to it again sometime.

Just curious, can anyone tell me what the brown thingy on his guitar top is?

I was wondering the same thing, and I agree about the singer ... for such a pretty song, maybe someone a little more ... um, well ... you know... but it was nice, right?

Hmmmm....

It's a Sabine AX-2000 contact tuner. Sticks to the top using a tactile silicone pad. I have one, and it works pretty well, but not as well as a good clip-on. Also, they refuse to stick to the textured top of an Adamas. Discontinued now I think.

Judging from the comments, I'd hazard a guess he was the one who put music and melody to the lyric.

I was going to click on the link until I read there was an accordion in it.

Unless it's being slashed open with a craft knife, an accordion holds no attraction for me.

I'd prefer a banjo.

Good song. Might be better if you were crying in your fourth or fifth beer. I like the "box" but I think a set of Irish pipes would be good too.

The accordian isn't too intrusive, it's not like the Lawrence Welk show, don't be scared.

And thanks, Paul, for the info on the brown thingy. I thought it was a contact lens case, but that seemed silly.

And thanks

But JS, did you LIKE the song?

Yep. That accordian filled in quite sweetly, I thought. Nothing like Lawrence Welk ... HAW!

Then again, I am a HUGE Flaco Jimenez and Texas Tornado fan, haha ... the accordian in this song is NOTHING like what they used to do. Geez.

I just LOVE all kinds of music ... anything really, as long as it's "good", and of course THAT is open to interpretation fer sure ...

I like the lyrics you posted--I think if I heard it done by, maybe, Emmylou Harris, it'd knock me out.

Yeah Muzza...open your mind, pour your brain out, and fill the empty space with an accordian. You'll like it.
