First, the color.Get that out of the way fast. I want Barnboard.Remember that? Some call it Grayburst. Base it on an Elite LX, that gives you the Ebony fretboard and bridge, binding, all that stuff. Gloss black finish on the neck. Slot Head, steel string. Gold tuners.Mounted like a Banjo. Some type of inlay on the 12"th fret unique to this guitar and me. As you can tell,I have thought about this alot.

The Barnboard like they used for the 82 Collector's is what you're talking about right? Would you do inlaid Eppies or Outies? I wish that when I'd had my 12 CL custom built for me in 1990, I'd have done some extra stuff too but I simply didn't know much about what they could do. I would have had the Abalone run up the sides of the neck like my 87 Collector's is done, I'd have had it run around the headstock like the Book Elite, I'd have had the neck done with the 5-piece design rather than all black, or maybe even a Slothead, maybe had my last name inlaid on the 12th fret....hmmmm, I wonder if I sent it back..... I tell you though Patch's Redwood 1713X that he recently had done is about as close to perfect to me as I've seen, and besides, I really want a nylon Ovation. I told him when I got rich I wouldn't copy what he did EXACTLY but it'd be close :)

I would recommend Al in particular. He's coordinated a few customs for me, and even when something hasn't technically been done before, the factory will still work with you. For instance, I wanted the original 13-piece epaulets on my custom 1187 SSB cutaway slothead. Ovation has never made a 13 piece epi for the smaller treble side of a cutaway, but they were prepared to make one for me if I was willing to pay the custom set-up charge. It was cost-prohibitive, so I went with the epi delete option. Nonetheless, Ovation would have built one for me if I just had to have it. Call Al. It may be more reasonable than you think.

Not sure how you would do that on a slothead. I've got 5-Star tuners on one of my ukuleles and they are pretty cool indeed. Good luck.

To me, the garden variety Balladeer has such simple elegance, I wouldn't change a thing. That would be like asking me to custom order a Zippo lighter. I can't think of a thing I would change.

The more I think of it, these WOULD be cool on an Ovation guitar headstock! ![]() If I was going to have Al order another custom for me I would do one thing ... I'd have a contour bowl cut down about 3/4 inches into a "mid depth contour bowl". I talked to the factory about it and was told it would be an expensive and wildly difficult job due to the neck attachment. Looks like the Collectors Series might have gone tits up. But if there was going to be a next Collectors Series, maybe a mid depth contour would be a cool idea. Just my opinion.

I bought a guild 12 string that does not have them and I realy never noticed. However if you are playing with someone who is trying to follow you on a new song they have a harder time keeping up w/out the dots.

You're better off, at that price point getting something either used, or a new discontinued item. I got a new discontinued MEWP, and she's my go to axe. I recommend you scour the music stores where you live, check out the internet, craig's list and ebay, and then contact Al. I agree, dot markers are useless, though I like a target diamond at the 12 fret. If I look at the fretboard, I'm looking at the side markers.
